Lancashire have signed Sri Lanka all-rounder Farveez Maharoof as their overseas player for the 2011 season.

The 26-year-old, who has played 20 Test matches and 94 one-day internationals, will be available for the whole summer.

Lancashire cricket director Mike Watkinson said: "Farveez is a very experienced cricketer and is still relatively young.

"He's shown a real desire to come and play for us this season and we look forward to welcoming him on board."

Maharoof, who bowls right-arm fast-medium, has taken 24 wickets at an average on 60.75 in Test cricket and made his last appearance in the five-day format in Australia in 2007.

He has enjoyed more success in ODIs, picking up 121 victims at 25.89, but he is not part of the Sri Lanka World Cup squad.

"I am really looking to playing for such a great club like Lancashire and excited by the challenge of contributing towards a successful season," said the right-handed batsman.

Lancashire head coach Peter Moores added: "Farveez has a track record of getting important runs and picking up vital wickets. He's available to us for the full season and will be a competitive addition to our squad."
