Bears bowlers Woakes & Patel force Sussex to follow on

Sussex face a fight to avoid an innings defeat after being bowled out for 259 on a rain-interrupted day at Edgbaston.

Resuming on 103-3, only Murray Goodwin put up any lasting resistance with 94.

The Bears' two main destroyers were young England hopeful Chris Woakes (4-67) and New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel (4-52).

After being invited to follow on, the visitors lost Chris Nash and Luke Wells before an early close on 71-2, still 191 shy of making the hosts bat again.

Despite being without the influential Boyd Rankin, title-chasing Warwickshire still managed to work their way through the Sussex middle-order with ease in the morning session.

From 103-3, the visitors soon found themselves on 119-5 with night-watchman James Anyon and Michael Yardy falling cheaply.

Patel, who is in the side while Warwickshire await of the arrival of West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, then took three of the last five wickets.

Goodwin was the only player to provide any resistance, his four-and-a-half knock contained only seven boundaries.

Following-on, Sussex fared slightly better with Ed Joyce unbeaten on 42 at stumps.
