Northants captain Andrew Hall has agreed a two-year contract extension until 2014.
The 36-year-old South African all-rounder hit 960 County Championship runs this season, including two centuries, at an average of 50.52.
He also claimed 28 wickets in 16 Division Two matches as Northants missed out on promotion.
"I've had a good season and I hope to continue to help the county achieve their ambitions," he said.
"When I started here, [head coach] David Capel and I said we wanted to bring through the next group of local, young players, and with me staying for 12 months of the year, it gives me a great opportunity to work with them."
Capel added: "Andrew has done particularly well for us over the past few years. Again he is leading the way with the bat this year, in terms of playing some very important innings, especially in the Championship.
"I look forward to continuing working with him in leading and coaching throughout the ranks at Northants Cricket."
The former South Africa international arrived at Wantage Road in 2008 and has made 3,074 first-class runs, as well as a further 1,447 in limited overs cricket, for the county.
