Sussex: Andrew Miller aims to impress after earning deal

Seam bowler Andrew Miller hopes to challenge for a place in the Sussex team after earning a contract at Hove.

The 25-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Division One outfit last week following a trial period.

He told BBC Sussex: "I will take it one day at a time. At Sussex if you are performing you are going to be in and around [the team].

"To me, it is a case of doing my job day-in, day-out and letting the rest take care of itself."

Miller, released by Warwickshire at the end of last season, impressed Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson on pre-season trips to South Africa and Dubai.

The Preston-born player travelled with the squad to Headingley ahead of Sussex's opening County Championship match against Yorkshire, but missed out on a place in the first XI.

"All I wanted was an opportunity and to get a foot in the door. After that it was down to me," he said.

"The motivation is there to play and I think I have got a few things to prove. I went out to Dubai and gave it everything and that has got me here.

"I have loved every second I have spent down here. There were limited opportunities at Warwickshire and that's something that really motivates me here.

"If I was to pigeon-hole myself it would be as an old fashioned line and length bowler. I've been tagged underneath Steve Magoffin in that sort of role."

Robinson said Miller's application during pre-season convinced him to offer the former Lancashire academy player a deal.

"It is a funny one because we weren't really looking for a bowler," he explained.

"Andy was without a club and we said he could come and train with us.

"Circumstances took over a bit as Amjad Khan's prognosis of his injury was put back a bit and Kirk Wernars left us as well.

"Suddenly we started to think we needed a bit more cover and Andy seemed to fit the bill with his character, perseverance and determination.

"He more than held his own in Dubai and it's an opportunity to re-launch his career."
