World Cup qualifying: Scotland secure place at finals with win

Scotland have qualified for the 2015 Cricket World Cup courtesy of a tense three-wicket victory over Kenya.

Chasing 261 for victory, Scotland recovered from 169 for six to win the qualifier in New Zealand with three balls to spare.

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen (78) and Rob Taylor's unbeaten 46 provided crucial knocks.

Opener Alex Obanda was Kenya's top scorer with 89 as they were bowled out for 260.

The win ensured Scotland finished second in the Super Six qualifying table behind the United Arab Emirates.

Former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood and Craig Wright were appointed Scotland's coaching team following Peter Steindl's departure last December.

Collingwood won the Ashes three times and is England's most capped one-day international player, while Wright is a former Scotland skipper.

Wright told BBC Scotland the players were "chuffed" with their achievements and relishing the prospect of shining on the big stage.

"I've been in these situations a few times now and it doesn't get any easier," Wright said.

"You hope in these situations, where it's difficult that there'll be one or two players who'll stand up and show real character and determination.

"We were fortunate that we had that today with captain Preston Mommsen and then Rob Taylor at the end who saw us home in a really high-pressure situation.

"This will be a lot of these players' first opportunity to play in a World Cup. Obviously, they were delighted and it was mixed with relief as well.

"It's been a tough couple of years for the team, having missed out on the T20 World Cup before Christmas.

"So, jubilation and relief were the emotions prevalent. Myself and Paul Collingwood took over this role as joint coaches at pretty short notice for this tournament.

"All our focus has been on doing as well as we could and ensure we got a positive outcome.

"Playing in an event like the World Cup is a fantastic experience; the players are certainly chuffed with themselves. As for my involvement, we'll wait and see what happens with that over the next couple of months."
