Jersey struggling against spinners, says captain Peter Gough

Captain Peter Gough says Jersey must gain confidence against spin to get the runs they need to win their first match at World Cricket League Division Four.

They lost their first two games against and Oman after failing to defend totals of 180 and 185.

"There's a lot of good spinners here but they're on reasonably flat wickets," Gough told BBC Radio Jersey at the event in Singapore.

"We're struggling to back ourselves against the spinners when we bat."

Gough hit 60 and Nat Watkins scored 33 against Malaysia, while Jonty Jenner's 55 and Ben Steven's 37 against Oman are the only island scores above 30 so far.

"You've got to be really positive with the bat," Gough added.

"Jonty and Stevo were striking at between 80 and 100 and we want more of our batsmen to be striking at that rate.

"It's tough but we need to go in with a positive mindset with our batting.

"In this league the bad balls that maybe you got in the leagues before aren't there so often, but we've got the options against that bowling, it's just being positive enough to use it."

One player who has impressed so far is 16-year-old Jenner, whose 55 against Oman was accompanied by a good fielding performance which saw him take an outstanding diving catch to dismiss Oman's Vaibhav Wategaonkar.

"It's been a hard couple of days with two losses, but morale is still high," Jenner said.

"It was good to get some runs, I've struggled to get runs for basically all season.

"There's good signs, there's a lot of boys whose runs are coming and we'll get a big score."

His captain was also keen to praise the work of Jenner, who has been part of the youth set-up at Sussex.

"He did brilliantly, he hit the ball straight really well," Gough said.

"When the ball was in an area where he was confident with he hit the ball for four or a six.

"Not just that, but in the field as well he was outstanding, he saved 15 or 20 runs and took a great catch."
