Monty Panesar's fine bowling helped Essex close in on victory at stumps on day three against hosts Glamorgan.

Resuming on 131-5, Essex made 222 all out, thanks to half-centuries from Ryan ten Doeschate (63no) and Greg Smith (58), setting Glamorgan 348 to win.

The hosts' two openers both fell to Panesar (5-90), the spinner taking himself up to 10 wickets for the match as Glamorgan slipped to 145-7.

However, Graham Wagg (64no) dug deep to take the hosts to 237-8 at the close.

Essex now need just two more wickets to win the match, while Glamorgan require a further 111 runs.

A win would keep Essex's hopes of promotion to Division One alive.
