Chase became only the fourth Durham player to take five wickets on debut

Durham coach Jon Lewis praised debutant Peter Chase after his five-wicket haul helped seal a 54-run Championship win against Nottinghamshire.

Chase, 20, had been playing second XI cricket for Durham but was drafted into the squad with Graham Onions injured and Ben Stokes unavailable.

His 21-run partnership with centurion Paul Collingwood in Durham's second innings preceded his bowling feat.

"He's been excellent with the ball," Lewis told BBC Newcastle.

Lewis has looked to Paul Coughlin and now Chase to supplement the frontline seam attack of John Hastings and Chris Rushworth.

The selection paid off as Durham secured a win that boosts their hopes of avoiding the drop while denting Nottinghamshire's title ambitions.

"I thought at the start we'd need Hastings and Rushworth to get at least six of the wickets to be honest because they're our two most experienced guys," he added.

"For Chase and Coughlin to get seven of the last 10 was excellent."
