Durham v Nottinghamshire: Peter Chase leads hosts to vital victory

Chase became just the fourth Durham player to claim a five-fer on debut

Peter Chase took 5-50 on his debut to help Durham claim a 54-run victory over Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street.

The 20-year-old had Riki Wessels (90) caught in the deep by Gordon Muchall, before dismissing Ajmal Shahzad and Luke Fletcher in consecutive balls.

Jake Ball (20) survived Chase's hat-trick ball only to be caught at third slip off him 10 overs later.

Chris Read was bowled by John Hastings in the last over before lunch as Notts' title hopes were dealt a serious blow.

Nottinghamshire began the final day on 196-4, requiring a further 178 run to claim a record fourth-innings victory in Durham, but Wessels added just 10 runs to his overnight score.

Paul Coughlin trapped James Franklin (39) lbw as the away side lost four wickets for just 21 runs to slump to 241-8.

Read (47) and Ball shared a 44-run ninth-wicket partnership before Chase had the latter caught by Muchall for his fifth wicket, becoming just the fourth Durham player to achieve the feat on his debut.

Notts continued to resist and became only the sixth team to make 300 runs in the fourth innings at Chester-le-Street.

Paul Collingwood dropped Read at first slip off Chase before Hastings knocked the Nottinghamshire skipper's middle stump out of the ground to end the game.

Durham's victory moved them out of the relegation places and they still have a game in hand over Lancashire, who are also fighting to avoid finishing in the bottom two.

Following their narrow defeat, Nottinghamshire face a potential title-deciding match against Yorkshire next week at Trent Bridge.

"It was a very good performance and a very important win, which we needed because the defeat at Old Trafford was a real kick in the guts.

"Winning in any form of the game brings momentum and our cup quarter-final win at Headingley was massive.

"It will also help going into Saturday's One-Day Cup semi-final."

Victory against Notts was Durham's third this season

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell:

"In this match Chris Rushworth and John Hastings were better than anything we had and we were three down very quickly in both innings.

"We didn't look in any trouble in the first half hour today, but a loose shot to a nothing ball started the rot.

"We can't blame Riki Wessels for that because he scored 90 and has been outstanding this season.

"I genuinely thought we had a serious chance as long as he was there."
