Worcestershire v Surrey: Jason Roy hits hundred as hosts wilt

England new boy Jason Roy led the way with a ton for Surrey as Worcestershire almost wilted in the sun at New Road.

Responding to the home side's 272 all out, Surrey piled up maximum bonus points as they totalled 406 for a first-innings lead of 134.

Roy (103), Rory Burns (91), Gary Wilson (77) and Steven Davies (63) all weighed in before Jack Shantry's late burst with the second new ball to take 6-87.

League leaders Worcestershire saw out the final six overs to close on 12-0.

The main consolation for Steve Rhodes' men was that it could have been worse against their promotion rivals.

At one stage, having resumed on 59-0, Surrey looked set for an overwhelming score on 373-4 before losing their last six wickets for just 33, with Shantry cashing in as the visitors neared the 110-over mark in search of full batting points.

Shantry's second six-wicket haul against Surrey this season (he took 6-53 at The Oval in June) took his season's haul of Championship victims to 50.

That included a first-ball duck for Gareth Batty on his return to New Road, after removing another ex-Worcestershire player, Aneesh Kapil, with his previous delivery.

Of the rest of Surrey's four-man former Worcestershire contingent, Davies fared best, although Vikram Solanki had looked in regal touch until edging to first slip on 28.

Burns' efforts took him past 1,000 firs-class runs for the season for the first time in his career.

Worcestershire paceman Jack Shantry:

"I just plugged away, bowled it in the right areas and the ball started swinging later on and luckily they nicked it.

"The pitch was quite flat, but we came back well. The ball swung all day, so as long as the ball is swinging you have a chance as a bowler.

"At 130 behind, we are just still in the game. If they had got 200 ahead, our chances of winning would have gone completely."

Surrey batsman Jason Roy:

"It has been a great day for us. We got set a good platform by Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari and everyone else who came in contributed really well.

"They made it a lot easier for me at the end there. I was just pleased I got over the line with the 100. There was a big sigh of relief from me.

"I was also pleased we got the final batting point because they could all be important at the end of the season."
