Derbyshire v Leicestershire: Ben Slater keeps Foxes at bay

Derbyshire announced on Tuesday that Slater has signed a new contract, keeping him at the club until 2016

Derbyshire opener Ben Slater struck a century to keep Leicestershire at bay on the opening day at Derby.

Slater, who signed a new contract this week, made 104 from 209 deliveries as his side posted 289.

Wes Durston struck 52, while Cheteshwar Pujara became the first player to be given out handled the ball in England since 1996.

The visitors slipped to 25-2 in reply, 264 behind, with Mark Footitt and Tony Palladino taking a wicket apiece.

With the match effectively a dead rubber, the story of the day was arguably the dismissal of India batsman Pujara.

Using his hand to prevent a delivery from striking his stumps, he became the first player to be out handled the ball since Karl Krikken, playing for Derbyshire against India on the same ground 18 years ago.

"I'm delighted to get my maiden first-class hundred and it's a good feeling."

Leicestershire all-rounder Ben Raine:

"It's a very good pitch. We bowled on the overhead conditions, it was a bit cloudy and we thought it might do something off the pitch but it didn't do much.

"Even so, we've had a positive day which is something to look forward to for next season."
