Close, day one: Glamorgan v Hampshire 357

Hampshire 4 pts, Glamorgan 3 pts

Centuries from James Vince and Sean Ervine helped promotion-chasing Hampshire recover well at Glamorgan.

The visitors slumped to 53-5 in the morning session as Jim Allenby (4-74) took two wickets in as many balls.

Vince (144) and Ervine (107) put on 225 to rescue a tricky situation as Hampshire were dismissed for 357.

Hampshire still have aspirations of the Division Two title, especially with leaders Worcestershire struggling in their game with third-placed Essex.

But Hampshire will also have to keep an eye on Essex themselves, who can still pinch second spot off them in the fight for promotion.

VIEW FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX

BBC Wales' Ed Bevan:

"James Vince and Sean Ervine shared a record partnership of 225 for the sixth wicket against Glamorgan to complete Hampshire's recovery after they slumped to 53-5 before lunch.

"They would have been in further trouble had David Lloyd not dropped Vince at mid-wicket in the first over after lunch, which would have reduced them to 91-6.

"Hampshire have gained four batting points and will strive for more from this final game, with Essex- their main contenders for promotion to Division One - in a commanding position at Chelmsford."

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James:

"At 53-5 it looked as though the Hampshire innings would fold quickly, but James Vince and Sean Ervine helped the visitors to the highest first innings total at Sophia Gardens this season.

"But with Essex doing well against Worcestershire, it may still need a Hampshire victory here to secure promotion."
