Mark Cosgrove could be Leicestershire's new captain, should he join the club, says chief executive Wasim Khan.

Talks are well advanced in a bid to bring the 30-year-old South Australia batsman, who holds a British passport, to Grace Road.

If a deal is not struck, the club will choose from their existing staff.

"Should conversations progress with Mark, there is a good chance he could come over as our captain," Khan told BBC Radio Leicester.

"I think it will be mid-March before we get somewhere with that because he's currently contracted to South Australia and it could take a little bit of time to get to a conclusion."

Khan has confirmed overseas signing Clint McKay will not be available for Leicestershire's first game of the 2015 County Championship season.

The seam bowler is getting married at the end of the current Australian season and will not be in England until 15 April, so the home game with Northants on 26 April will be the first for which he will be available.

Meanwhile, talks are ongoing to sign an overseas all-rounder for Leicestershire's T20 Blast campaign.

"We are talking to one or two very good cricketers about bringing them here and are progressing those conversations," added Khan.

"If you suddenly have that player, Clint McKay, Niall O'Brien and all your others with international experience, then we have a half-decent one-day team."
