County Championship: Glamorgan win after Essex rearguard action

Ryan ten Doeschate made 49 and 74 not out on his first Championship appearance of the season

Glamorgan recorded their first County Championship win of the season as they beat Essex by 89 runs despite valiant resistance on the final afternoon.

Ryan ten Doeschate was unbeaten on 74 but ran out of partners as Essex were bowled out for 274 just after tea.

After starting the day on 51-2, needing a further 313 to win, an early finish looked likely as Essex slid to 130-5.

Ten Doeschate shared stands of 68 with Kishen Velani and 44 with Callum Taylor but the home attack got the job done.

Early in the day, Dan Lawrence had made 43 as he took his overnight partnership with nightwatchman Jamie Porter to 69.

Off spinner Andrew Salter (a career-best 3-54) and Australian paceman Michael Hogan (3-67) each claimed three wickets for Glamorgan, who climb to third in the Division Two table, within 26 points of leaders Lancashire and two behind Northants.

Glamorgan off spinner Andrew Salter:

"The boys had to work really hard to get the result, but if you look at the way we came together, Hogan bowled really well and he's consistently just class for us.

"It was a tough week but we showed a lot of character out there. I loved it out there, happy to bowl some longer spells because it doesn't happen often but when the sun's out in Cardiff you get as many as you can.

"The morale's high in the changing room, we had a good win against Surrey in the T20 and we've just carried on from there."

Glamorgan coach Toby Radford:

"I'm very pleased with the all-round performance, especially as we were without David Lloyd, our fourth seamer.

"Although there was some help for the quicker bowlers, there were times when the pitch became placid and it was hard work.

"It was also good to see Andrew Salter contribute so well in his first Championship game of the season."

Essex coach Paul Grayson:

"I'm disappointed overall, especially the way we collapsed in the first innings.

"But I was pleased by the character of the young lads on the final day.

"If we show the same fight for the rest of the season, we will be all right."

"It was no coincidence for Essex that the final margin of defeat mirrored their first innings deficit.

"Essex did not recover from losing their last six first innings wickets while adding just 20. However, they will be lifted by their improved performance on the final day.

"Ryan ten Doeschate could hardly have done more since his return and the contribution of the younger batsmen bodes well. However, the absence of Jesse Ryder, particularly with the ball, was significant."
