Glamorgan: 'Hard-fought' Essex win pleases coach Toby Radford

Head coach Toby Radford says Glamorgan are "finally round the corner" with their first County Championship win of the season.

Glamorgan beat Essex by 89 runs in Cardiff after four consecutive draws in Division Two - against Leicestershire, Surrey, Derbyshire and Kent.

"It was a hard-fought four days and they didn't lie down," said Radford.

"There were so many contributors in this game which was the really pleasing thing."

Young spinner Andrew Salter and paceman Michael Hogan claimed three wickets each in the Essex second innings, as Glamorgan moved up to third.

"We always felt the win was just around the corner and we've finally got round the corner," Radford added.

"The performance gives confidence to so many people for future matches, we have Northampton in a week's time and the T20 against Essex with so many in-form."

"Andrew Salter coming in, I thought he bowled particularly well today, picking up three wickets and bowling with a lot of control."

Salter's 3-54, with all his victims from the top five, represented a career-best first-class performance - although the 21-year-old himself was unaware of the feat.

It was the first time he had been selected ahead of the experienced Dean Cosker for a Championship match.

"You have to put a lot of work in behind the scenes which not many people see, good performances with the seconds and hours in training so when these opportunities come you really want to take them," Salter said.

"I would like to have played a bigger part today but I'm really looking forward to the next challenge."

Glamorgan go straight into another encounter with Essex in the T20 Blast at the Swalec Stadium on Friday.

But they will again have to delay the debut of South African paceman Wayne Parnell after he failed to recover from injury.

"Wayne Parnell's still got a groin issue, he's been seeing the physio all week and he's been in the gym but he won't be fit," said Radford.

"He's potentially a major bowler for us but we won without him last week and we can win again without him.

"There's a real buzz about the T20 and it was great here at the Swalec last year, so we're looking forward to our first home game after a really good win at Surrey."

All-rounder David Lloyd is also missing from the squad with a hamstring injury, with Ruaidhri Smith taking his place.

In contrast Essex will have England one-day specialist Ravi Bopara back from the Indian Premier League and have also named fit-again New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder in their squad.
