Glenn Hoddle hails 'magnificent' Swansea manager Garry Monk

Swansea manager Garry Monk now stands equal with former bosses including Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool

Garry Monk's progress as Swansea City manager has been praised by former England boss Glenn Hoddle.

In his first full season in charge, Monk has led Swansea to their highest Premier League finish of eighth place with a club record points total.

The 36-year-old was placed in charge of the Welsh club in February 2014 following the sacking of Michael Laudrup.

"It's been magnificent, it really has," Hoddle, 57, said.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Everton boss Roberto Martinez are just two of men Monk has succeeded and draws comparisons with.

"There's been a few coaches that have gone in there [Swansea] before and done excellent jobs," Hoddle said.

"And when someone like Garry has taken over, from player to manager, it's a real tough job to... equal it, but he's gone past it. It's been brilliant.

"I had him as a youngster at Southampton as an 18-year-old centre-half, so it's really great to see him doing so well."

Monk has been linked with taking over at West Ham United, although Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins says he expects to agree a new contract with Monk "very quickly".

"Swansea's where they are in the league and I think that's probably where West Ham would like to be as well," Hoddle added.

"So I don't know if it is something he'd like to do or not, but he's obviously very happy in Swansea."

Former England. Everton and Manchester United midfielder Phil Neville says Monk should stay at the Liberty Stadium.

"I'd say stick at Swansea," said Neville.

"They've given him an opportunity and he's continuing to build a football club.

"He's got a long time, he's only a young manager, there'll be plenty more opportunities for him."
