Karl Brown and Ashwell Prince both hit meaningful scores as Lancashire battled back in the sunshine against Northants.
Ben Duckett's 134 on day one set up the Northants innings but they could only add 50 more runs on day two as James Faulker (4-63) impressed with the ball.
After opener Paul Horton (0) was out, Brown (97), Alex Davies (51) and Prince (83) led the Lancashire comeback.
South African Prince, 38, went past 18,000 first-class career runs with his knock and over 1,000 for this season.
The Division Two leaders bowled Northants out in the first hour of the morning at Old Trafford, and they recovered well after losing Horton in the second over.
Brown, 27 was looking to reach the second century of his career and his first in four years, but was out in the 90s for a fourth time.
The wickets of Brown and Prince in the closing stages will give the visitors some belief with the new ball due in the morning.
Lancashire batsman Ashwell Prince told BBC Sport:
"I think it is even stevens at the moment, we want to obviously get as close to their score or a little bit passed.
"If we get up to their score I think the pitch will start spinning and the game will speed up.
On reaching 1,000 runs for the season: "At the start of the season you have your goals, but it always comes back to what is more important and that is team and we want promotion."
