Yorkshire overtook Durham at the top of the County Championship Division One table after beating them by an innings and 47 runs at Chester-le-Street.

Resuming on 244-4, the hosts lost their last six wickets for 51 to be bowled out for 302, as Jack Brooks took 4-66.

Overnight centurion Mark Stoneman could only add 15 to his score before he was trapped lbw by Ryan Sidebottom for 131.

Brooks then tore through the tail as he claimed three wickets in seven balls to wrap up the win before lunch.

The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for Yorkshire, who were struggling on 191-6 on day one before Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan shared a record breaking seventh-wicket stand of 366.

Everyone's playing a hand for Yorkshire

Yorkshire had three batsmen in the side averaging over 68 this season - Jonny Bairstow (106), Tim Bresnan (83.50) and Jack Leaning (68.50)

There were also three bowlers with a bowling average of less than 24 - Adil Rashid (23.93), Steven Patterson (22.46) and Jack Brooks (22.42)

However their bowling unit, led by Brooks, were also instrumental in helping the White Rose county maintain an unbeaten start to the season with five wins out of eight.

On a hot and humid final morning in the north-east it was not long before the visitors found a breakthrough as Steven Patterson took advantage of the overhead conditions to swing one through Gordon Muchall's defences.

Shortly after taking the new ball, Sidebottom ended Stoneman's five-and-a-half hour innings and any hopes the hosts had of saving the game.

Once Australian John Hastings fell in the same fashion to the left-armer, the rest of the lower-order folded to Brooks, with Chris Rushworth the last man to fall when he nicked the seamer behind.

Yorkshire now hold an 11-point lead over Durham with a game in hand.

Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie:

"It's an enviable position to be in. The way the players went about their work was incredible.

"Making the opposition follow on is hard work, especially in such warm weather. Well, warm for England anyway.

"Our bowlers all bring something different. Steve Patterson might be the dot-ball king, but that's an important role for us. It allows Jack Brooks to keep attacking.

"Adil Rashid was brilliant. The consistency was there and he spun the ball hard. It was a good challenge for him and I keep saying he's ready for the next level."

Durham skipper Paul Collingwood:

"That partnership (between Bairstow and Bresnan) really took it away from us.

"It was a reward for the patience shown by their top order when the ball was seaming around.

"After that it became one of the best batting pitches we have had here, so we should have done better.

"Bairstow gave one half chance in his double century, but only Mark Stoneman has gone on for us. When you get in on a pitch like that you have to convert."
