Northamptonshire were forced to follow on as Mark Footitt put Derbyshire on top at Northampton on day two despite Ben Duckett's unbeaten century.
Resuming on 6-1, Footitt (5-41) reduced the hosts to 51-4 before Ben Cotton (3-26) helped mop up the tail as Northants were bowled out for a meagre 116.
Following on 245 runs behind, Duckett fought back with an unbeaten 132.
But Tony Palladino struck twice late on as Northants levelled the scores at the close, but with four wickets intact.
Footitt, who trained with England's pre-Ashes squad, removed three of Northants' top four, and later returned to complete his fourth five-wicket haul of the season.
He then struck early in the hosts' second innings, but Duckett, out for a golden duck late on day one, reached his third Championship ton off 134 balls, to offer faint hope.
