One-Day Cup: Middlesex seal win over Sussex as runs flow

Nick Gubbins and Dawid Malan scored centuries as Middlesex beat Sussex by three runs in a dramatic rain-hit game.

The pair shared a county one-day record 268 for the second wicket before Malan was bowled for 131 by Michael Yardy.

Gubbins hit nine fours and seven sixes in his 141 at Hove as Middlesex made 367-6 - their best-ever one-day score.

Sussex were set a revised target of 309 in 40 overs but could only reach 305-9 as George Bailey was run out in the final over after smashing 112.

The Australian's magnificent 76-ball knock followed Luke Wright's 72 and kept the visitors in the game, but Sussex kept on losing wickets as the run rate climbed towards the end of the innings.

With nine needed off three balls, Bailey was run out attempting to come back for two.

Middlesex were without England one-day captain Eoin Morgan, who is being rested as he seeks to recover his form.

Earlier, 21-year-old Gubbins brought up his maiden century off 93 balls with a magnificent straight six off Chris Liddle.

Malan reached his fifth limited-overs century in Liddle's next over off exactly 100 balls as the home bowlers could find no answers to the pair's relentless boundary hitting.

When both eventually fell in the space of three balls, John Simpson (50) took Middlesex past their previous best one-day score of 350 with a 23-ball half century.
