Kevin O'Brien ruled out of Ireland's Australia game by injury

Kevin O'Brien has been ruled out of Ireland's one-day international against Australia in Belfast on Thursday because of a hamstring injury.

All-rounder O'Brien, 31, trained with the Ireland squad on Thursday morning but it was later announced he had been forced out of the Stormont game.

Max Sorensen has replaced O'Brien in the Ireland squad.

O'Brien's brother Niall will return to wicketkeeping duties for the game against the World Cup winners.

The Leicestershire player has not worn the keeping gloves for Ireland since since being left out of the tour of Kenya three years ago although he has continued to be picked as a batsman.

Previous coach Phil Simmons was upset that O'Brien had wanted to miss the opening matches of the 2012 tour because of his involvement in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Surrey player Gary Wilson has been Ireland's regular keeper since then but skipper William Porterfield confirmed on Wednesday that O'Brien would be handed the gloves for the visit of the Australians.

Porterfield added that new coach John Bracewell was keen to see O'Brien in action behind the stumps.

"Bracers (Bracewell) has come in and he wants to have the chance to have a look at the both of them so Niall will be keeping tomorrow," said the Ireland captain.

"It's a good opportunity for Niall but that's as far as it goes at this stage."

Steve Smith will lead the world champions in Belfast following Michael Clarke's retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Smith, who had deputised as skipper in both Test and one-day cricket when Clarke was injured, was long seen as Australia's captain in waiting and is looking forward to taking up the role full-time.

"I've known for a little while now that I was going to be taking over the one-day squad, so I've been working pretty hard and preparing for everything coming up," said Smith, 26.

"The last time this group was together we won a World Cup, so I don't think we have to change a whole heap."

Smith's squad contains other World Cup winners in David Warner, Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc while Joe Burns is expected to make his one-day debut for the Aussies.

Burns, 25, did play in the Test series against India last December and January.

After the game against Ireland, Australia will face England in a Twenty20 game on Monday before the five-match one-day series against the Ashes winners begins on 3 September.
