Glamorgan youngster Dewi Penrhyn Jones savours debut

Persistent rain on day one at Wantage Road meant Dewi Penrhyn Jones was kept in the dressing room

Glamorgan seam bowler Dewi Penrhyn Jones said he was "amazed" to get a first-class debut a few days after reaching his 21st birthday.

Penrhyn Jones was called up for the Championship match against Northants because David Lloyd, his second cousin, could not bowl because of injury.

"It's obviously a dream for me to play first-class cricket. That's what I've been aiming to do since I was small.

"To have that opportunity is great," he told BBC Wales Sport.

Penrhyn Jones is still waiting for his opportunity to impress after rain restricted play at Northampton to 5.5 overs on the first day, with Glamorgan reaching 23-1.

The Wrexham-born bowler followed in his father Russell's footsteps in playing club cricket for Brymbo CC, before winning a place in the Glamorgan academy.

"My dad's done a lot for me since I was little, driving me back and forth between Cardiff and north Wales," he added.

He played one limited-overs game for Glamorgan in 2014 and has featured in two One-Day Cup matches in 2015, at Lord's and Old Trafford.

"It's definitely different to the one-day stuff, championship cricket is the main aim so hopefully I'll get a good one under my belt.

"Lord's was a massive learning experience for me (taking 1 for 73) but I'm happy to have played there, that's where everyone wants to play since they're little so it was a good experience."
