County Championship: Adam Lyth fails as Yorkshire struggle

Liam Dawson's century for Hampshire was his seventh in first-class cricket

Adam Lyth's disappointment at being dropped by England was compounded by a duck on day two of Yorkshire's game against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

The home side earned maximum batting points before declaring on 400-9, with all-rounder Liam Dawson making 140.

Opener Lyth was then caught in the slips from Fidel Edwards' second ball.

The paceman also had Gary Ballance dropped, but he was later caught at mid-wicket off Gareth Berg for 30 as the champions struggled to 82-4.

Relegation-threatened Hampshire must now hope bad weather stays away from the Southampton area as they look to press home their advantage over the final two days.

They resumed on 219-4 after a delayed start and Dawson's well-played 212-ball innings, which was his first century for two years and Hampshire's highest Championship score of the season, ensured they claimed all five bonus points for the first time in 2015 by reaching 400 with seven balls to spare.

He put on 124 for the fifth wicket with Sean Ervine (43) and struck 18 fours before he was the ninth man dismissed, caught by wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd as he top-edged an attempted sweep off James Middlebrook.

Jack Brooks claimed 3-97 for Yorkshire, who suffered their first loss of the season against Middlesex last week, and there were two wickets for 17-year-old seam bowler Matthew Fisher before the declaration came.

Following Lyth's early departure in Yorkshire's reply, Ballance and Alex Lees (31 not out) added 51 before the former became a first victim on his home ground for Hampshire's Ryan Stevenson.

Ryan McLaren (2-22) then removed Andrew Gale and Jack Leaning in successive overs before bad light ended play.
