Worcestershire were made to regret their decision to put their hosts in as Leicestershire's batsmen dominated a rain-curtailed first day at Grace Road.
Thee home batsmen made fifties, sparked by a 141-run opening stand between Paul Horton (89) and Angus Robson (50).
Leicestershire then suffered a mini collapse to plummet to 157-3 as Matt Henry picked up two quick wickets.
But Neil Dexter also made 50, while Mark Pettini was still there at the close on 45 out of 253-4.
Charlie Morris got one wicket on his first appearance of the season and might have had another, but Horton was missed at second slip on 54.
After a halt in mid-afternoon, the day's play did not end until late, after coming back on four overs at 18:30 BST, during which time Leicestershire earned a second batting point.
