T20 Blast: Hampshire beat Glamorgan by 25 runs

Hampshire 167-6 (20 overs): Dawson 76*, Weatherley 43; Wagg 3-38

Glamorgan 142-7 (20 overs): Wallace 45, Dawson 4-23

Liam Dawson starred with bat and ball as an inexperienced Hampshire side outplayed high-flying Glamorgan.

Dawson's unbeaten 76 was the lynchpin of the home innings, with support from Shahid Afridi (25) and Joe Weatherley (43) after early struggles.

Dawson then claimed four wickets as Hampshire's spinners dominated, with only Mark Wallace (45) offering meaningful resistance from Glamorgan.

It was only the second win of the campaign for Hampshire.

The home team looked to be under the cosh when they lost three wickets for 20, but they rebuilt on a slow pitch thanks to Dawson's career-best knock off 54 balls.

He batted well in partnership with Weatherley, the pair running quickly between the wickets and hitting hard late on.

Graham Wagg claimed two early victims and took a superb diving catch to dismiss the dangerous Afridi before suffering late punishment.

Glamorgan had a substantial target of 168 to chase, but fell away badly to a third defeat in 11 matches, after a half-century opening stand between David Lloyd and Mark Wallace.

Wagg (25) was the next highest scorer as Dawson, Afridi and teenager Brad Taylor did the damage.

Hampshire announced before the match that their England batsman Michael Carberry had been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour.

Carberry is battling serious illness for the second time, having recovered from blood clots on the lungs.

Hampshire captain Sean Ervine told BBC Sport: "Liam showed what a class player he is in white-ball cricket and we were out to spoil Glamorgan's party which we like doing.

"It hasn't been the season for us and we played a lot of youngsters today but the bowlers did really well.

"I think Glamorgan will be disappointed we got so many, after the start we had. Liam and Afridi got going and then young Joe Weatherley proved what a quality player he is.

"Michael Carberry to his credit came up, he wanted to speak to the guys about it [his illness]. It's shattering news but he's a strong character, he'll be in the best hands and he'll get through it."

Glamorgan vice-captain Mark Wallace told BBC Wales Sport: "Classic T20 really, we got on top with some early wickets and then Dawson came in and played very well. He's been in the England set-up and that showed with a very calm innings, accelerated at the end and got them up to a good score.

"It was a gettable score but we lost a few wickets in the middle and couldn't claw it back.

"It's a little bit of a kick to the confidence [losing two in a row] because we've played so well and won so many games. T20 cricket is normally a bit more up and down but we're still in a very strong position.

"As chairman of the Professional Cricket Association, Carbs [Michael Carberry] is a hugely popular character round the circuit. It's very sad news and I'm sure the whole cricketing fraternity will be very much behind Carbs, he's a great guy and he'll fight it all the way."
