My class and I have been discussing the various fielding positions and the angles of these positions, then classifying them according to whether they are acute, reflex or obtuse.

As a British culture teacher at a school in Luxembourg, I have taken the educational decision to screen today’s match in class to showcase an integral aspect of English summer culture.

    We've had another maiden.

Blessing Muzarabani has been the pick of the seamers, even if just a little bit too short.

Acceleration from Ben Duckett - 10 off his first 19 balls.

Since then, he has had 23 from his next 13 balls.

    Crawley 22, Duckett 37

A wayward opening over from Tanaka Chivanga gets worse as he bangs one in short and down the leg side, allowing Ben Duckett to help himself to the third four.

Chivanga, a stocky seamer who looks like he spends more than a few afternoons in the gym, stomps away looking thoroughly unimpressed at the end of the over.

England have got off to a Bazbally flier but haven't really had to work for it.

Ben Duckett is very strong on his legs.

Too straight and it raced across the hard part of the wicket. It was always going to be four once it got through the gap.

England are easily going at five runs an over without even trying.

    Four more!

    Don't bowl on a left-hander's pads.

  7. Eng 51-0published at 10.2 overs

Ben Duckett sends right-arm seamer Chivanga's second ball away.

The fifty is up in 62 balls.

  8. Eng 47-0published at 10 overs

    Crawley 22, Duckett 25

That boundary off the first ball is the only run in this over but 10 gone it has been about England boundaries rather than wickets or chances.

We have our first bowling change at the Pavilion End - currently the building site end - as Tanaka Chivanga replaces Richard Ngarava.

Just finished my physics exam. Straight to watching Crawley...

I get the frustrations, I really do, but when Zak Crawley drives like this I forgive everything.

    Another boundary for England.

There is a lot of responsibility on Zimbabwe's physio to keep all the fast bowlers fit.

Richard Ngarava is a similar build to Blessing Muzarabani.

He is perfect foil as he's a left-arm bowler, and he bowls a couple of miles per hour lower than Blessing.

    Crawley 18. Duckett 25

The TV cameras have found Sam and Tom Curran sat in the crowd. Ben is the middle of the three brothers and will hope to play his part with the bat.

Ben Duckett ends this over by clobbering a short ball. I've got a feeling we're going to see a lot of runs today.

Despite bowling an almost identical average length this morning (6.7m), these two Zimbabwean openers are finding vastly different amounts of movement through the air.

    Average swing this morning:

    Ngarava: 1.8°

    Muzarabani: 0.4°

Blessing Muzarabani is showing signs that he can beat the bat, but I don't think he's getting enough balls in the right area. Muzarabani is the kingpin of this bowling attack.

Now we need to hear from some students who are following. Just claim you're doing maths work - averages and all that.

I’d also like to deny, that as a Vice Principal (teacher), I am absolutely not watching.

    Four more!

This one is timed off the hip by Ben Duckett. The outfield really is quick. It's so dry.

England's Test batting averages at Trent Bridge (prior to today):

    • Ben Duckett - 73.50
    • Harry Brook - 72.50
    • Joe Root - 70.92
    • Ollie Pope - 60.16
    • Ben Stokes - 32.55
    • Gus Atkinson - 23
    • Jamie Smith - 21
    • Zak Crawley - 6.66
  19. Eng 34-0published at 7.1 overs

Ah this rivals the Zak Crawley boundary a ball before.

Ben Duckett eases Blessing Muzarabani through extra cover and it races across this dry outfield.

    Duckett likes batting here.

  20. Eng 26-0published at 7 overs

    Crawley 16, Duckett 10

Zak Crawley nails the dreamiest of extra cover drives but picks out the fielder. He gets another chance a ball later, times the ball just as well but picks the gap.

That's the best shot of the day.

This is already Crawley's highest first-innings score this summer, including his poor run in county cricket.
