Summary

  1. SA 77-1published at 22 overs

    Wolvaardt 36, Dercksen 27

Maiden from Ryana MacDonald-Gay as she bounces back after a more expensive third over.

That went for 10, the other three have gone for just one combined.

  2. SA 77-1published at 21.2 overs

    That has stayed very low.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay continues after drinks and her second ball pitches just back of a length before shooting just a couple of inches above the ground towards the stumps.

Annerie Dercksen has to be alert and manages to jam the ball down just in time. She's be thankful that it wasn't Lauren Filer bowling because the extra pace might have done for her.

It feels as though Ecclestone is just beginning to build a bit of pressure on Laura Wolvaardt.

    SA 77-1published at 21 overs

Sophie Ecclestone gets through another good over, she's yet to concede a run in her three overs so far in this innings.

The respect the South Africa batters have for her is already clear. For now, they're happy to try and get their runs at the other end.

    Time for drinks.

In international cricket, Ecclestone has dismissed Wolvaardt five times for an average of 19. No bowler has dismissed her more often, but four other players also have her wicket five times across international formats: Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Anya Shrubsole, Sophie Devine and Charlie Dean.

  6. SA 77-1published at 20 overs

Slightly too short from Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Laura Wolvaardt latches onto it.

The ball doesn't get up that much but Wolvaardt is able to swivel and pull it away behind square for four.

That brings up the fifty partnership.

A thick inside edge from Annerie Dercksen just gets past mid-wicket and the combination of a fast outfield and very short boundaries means the ball is at the cushion in a flash.

At times you can feel like you are not in control of a Test match, but it can just take one delivery to change the complexion of the game. If England were to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt it could really open things up.

A first look at spin today as Sophie Ecclestone comes into the attack.

It's a tidy start from the star left-arm spinner, who seems to be giving the ball a bit more flight that we have often seen from her.

That might be after seeing Nonkululeko Mlaba, who does bowl that much slower than Ecclestone, found plenty of turn yesterday evening for South Africa.

    Maiden.

Just a single from Ryana MacDonald-Gay's second over and that comes from the only ball in the over that isn't on the stumps.

An impressive start from the youngster. She is certainly giving England the control they're after.

  11. SA 66-1published at 17 overs

Good over from Nat Sciver-Brunt with that streaky boundary to start the over the only scoring shot.

England are trying to get back a bit of control after a flurry of South Africa boundaries.

That was a little fortunate for Annerie Dercksen. She was reaching for that one and it could have carried. That was a bit of a let-off for South Africa.

  13. SA 66-1published at 16.1 overs

Edged... but wide of second slip and away for four.

Very good bowling from Nat Sciver-Brunt to drag Annerie Dercksen forward and find the edge.

The South Africa all-rounder went hard at it but gets a bit of luck as the ball evades the fielders in the cordon.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay is quite a consistent bowler. She's looking to bowl straight and build some pressure.

  15. SA 62-1published at 16 overs

There must be plenty of nerves flying around for Ryana MacDonald-Gay but she isn't letting them show.

A very good, controlled first over in Tests from the 20-year-old. She holds a tight line, targeting the stumps and gets through a maiden to Laura Wolvaardt.

That's the thing with Nat Sciver-Brunt she has the consistency but not the pace so as a batter you feel more confident coming forward than you would do compared to say someone like Lauren Filer. Pace causes that bit of indecision, especially with the short ball.

  18. SA 62-1published at 15 overs

    Wolvaardt 30, Dercksen 18

We saw it when England were batting yesterday morning, too, but the pitch is good enough that anything that bit too full is there to drive.

South Africa's batters are only too happy to oblige. It's Annerie Dercksen this time, threading the fourth ball of the Nat Sciver-Brunt over through the in-field for four.

Two balls later and she goes back to punch through the covers for four more. The Proteas are building up a head of steam now.

Laura Wolvaardt has such good control. Her top half when she plays that drive is so technically balanced.
