It was short - and for Somerset, certainly not sweet.

Surrey are confirmed as 2024 county champions following the Cider Boys' defeat by Lancashire, who will still need another win next week to have a chance of avoiding relegation.

Somerset will take on Hampshire for the runners-up spot, while Yorkshire's win over Glamorgan means they will be favourites ahead of Middlesex for the second promotion spot.

That's it for our coverage today. Join us again on Saturday for the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final - and don't forget to take part in our County Championship team of the season vote.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty told BBC 5 Live Sports Extra:

"It's a whole squad, group of staff coming together and putting in a heck of a lot of work over a long period of time.#

"To do it three times in a row is very satisfying. We shall enjoy today and then start the hard work tomorrow to do it all again."

    BBC Radio London commentator

They had it on the big screen here at The Oval, but there was a bit of a delay between the commentary to the pitch.

So I heard the wicket go down and then about 20 seconds later a massive cheer came up from the Surrey dressing room.

Congratulations to them because it is a phenomenal achievement. Three years on the trot and the first time since Yorkshire in the '60s.

  9. 'It gives us real belief'published at 11:40 British Summer Time 20 September

Lancashire beat Somerset by 168 runs

Lancashire coach Dale Benkenstein told BBC 5 Live Sports Extra:

"Could we not just start the season now?

"Under the circumstances and you are struggling, low on confidence, to then turn up and play against a very strong side and put on a performance like that.

It changes the perspective in the dressing room and just gives us real belief that we can actually do it."

Five wicket haul for Kyle Abbott!

What a morning from the South African.

He wraps things up by finding Tom Taylor's outside edge and completing the victory inside an hour.

Hampshire move above Somerset ahead of a battle for second place at Taunton next week.

YORKSHIRE BEAT GLAMORGAN BY 186 RUNSpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 20 September

    Glamorgan 239 & 209, Yorkshire 361 & 273

    That's it!

Clinical and, crucially, patient stuff from the Yorkshire bowlers this morning as Jordan Thompson takes the final wicket to clinch the win.

James Harris, one short of an entertaining half-century, with a swish across the line looking for row z of the stands at mid-wicket, misses and Thompson hits the middle pole.

He finishes with 2-35 with Yorkshire wrapping it up in just over an hour on the final morning.

They now go second in Division Two, 15 points ahead of Middlesex, and look good for promotion going into the final match of the season at home to Northamptonshire.

  13. Postpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 20 September

    Worcestershire 158-9 - target 394

Worcestershire were getting behind the required rate, so Amar Virdi has got proactive.

Six big swings, four boundaries off Liam Dawson from the Surrey loanee.

Yeehaw, he has 16 off 14 balls.

Harris heaving awaypublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 20 September

    Glamorgan 200-9, target 396

James Harris is determined to go down swinging. He's just picked up the first ball of George Hill's second over gloriously over mid-wicket for six.

He's then followed that with something far less convincing - another massive wipe aimed through the off side that is inside-edged down to the fine leg boundary.

Harris isn't quite in the 'here for a good time not a long time' category as he's been at the crease for over an hour and clearly wants to throw some punches.

Jordan Thompson is on for Fisher now as Yorkshire seek this last wicket.

  15. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 20 September

    Worcestershire 142-9 - target 394

Tom Taylor might have a bad leg but his hands are just fine.

He pulls Kyle Abbott to the boundary with panache from his first ball.

His inside edge almost onto his stumps, which followed, was less attractive.

  16. wicket

WICKET Van Beek c Brown b Abbott 5published at 11:20 British Summer Time 20 September

    Worcestershire 138-9 - target 394

Kyle Abbott loves fishing...and he's brought his hobby to Utilita Bowl.

Logan van Beek nibbles at one which he should and Ben Brown nets the catch.

Tom Taylor is out with Kashif Ali as his runner.

Hampshire are one away from going second in the table.

  17. Yorkshire make first changepublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 20 September

    Glamorgan 182-9, target 396

Ben Coad's work for this match might be done. He's off having not taken the change to end with a 10-fer in this game.

Matthew Fisher has been the man this morning, taking both wickets to fall to put the visitors on the brink of victory.

George Hill is just about to complete his first over taking Coad's place and after conceding a two and a boundary, he's a graze away from wrapping the game up. James Harris wins up a huge one, clearing his front leg but completely missing the ball.

Two balls later, he gets it right. Middle-ing it back over a bemused Hill to the fence.

  18. Postpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 20 September

    Worcestershire 137-8 - target 394

There was a question mark over Tom Taylor's fitness and whether he could bat in the second innings.

But it looks like he has his pads on in the dressing room, so Hampshire will have to take the final two wickets to taste victory.

However, that run out means Liam Dawson can no longer take a third century and 10-wicket haul match combo for the third time in his career.

  19. Low point to high fives for Lancashirepublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 20 September

    Lancashire 140 & 398 v Somerset 146 & 224

Who would have thought that Lancashire would end up winning that game after being bowled out for 140 on the first day?

It all went wrong for Somerset when they failed to achieve much more than parity in their own first innings as 21 wickets fell in the first three sessions of the game.

The Cider Boys would still have fancied their chances when Lancashire were 168-6 in their second knock but a superb 130 by Luke Wells gave them too much to do in the run chase.

The home attack managed to extract more from the pitch on day three than Somerset's bowlers and when Lewis Gregory fell to the first ball today, the writing was on the wall in very big letters.

  20. wicket

WICKET Leach run out 1published at 11:09 British Summer Time 20 September

    Worcestershire 137-8 - target 394

    Does anyone smell a barbecue?

Logan van Beek defends and has no intention of pinching a single, but Joe Leach is charging at him.

Toby Albert picks up and throws down the non-strikers end and Leach is miles out of his ground.

Two brilliant pieces of fielding from Albert this morning.
