I’m an England fan, but I was desperately sad for Pakistan as they deserved to beat us and would have had it not been for the rain. I think it’s a very good point that the result of this tournament won’t be as valid as it should be. Winning this would be more out of luck of the weather than anything else! That is not the way to remember a tournament or its winner at all.

  4. Who will face who in the semi-finals?published at 16:12 BST 24 October

India, who trail third-placed England by three points with one match remaining, are guaranteed to finish in fourth position and will face the table-toppers in the semi-finals.

England can only finish in second or third place, meaning they will avoid facing hosts India in the last four.

Australia will take first place and set up a semi-final meeting with India if they avoid defeat to South Africa on Saturday.

Second-placed South Africa must beat Australia to finish top and face India, otherwise they will play England.

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I tried to control what I can. The expectation was high for us coming into this World Cup, but we lost the games against India and England. We have made mistakes but we will focus on what we can do in the future.

"We have good young players and seniors. Seniors always talk to the youngsters. As a captain, I am trying to give freedom to them to play positive cricket. We are playing a lot of cricket in Sri Lanka now and hopefully, we can be a better team in the future.

"I think we are close to the top four teams, but we have done so many mistakes in these games and you can't win with mistakes. And that's why we are in this position now.

"I am 35 years old now and have played a couple of World Cup but I am still looking forward to playing some more cricket."

I hope lessons are taken from the rain saga of Colombo. Competitions should not be decided by the weather and it has negatively impacted on the competition. Had Pakistan beaten England and gone on from there, where would that have left the standings?

  7. 'ICC must arrange good venues'published at 15:52 BST 24 October

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana: "We were very good in bowling and fielding but we lacked in batting. In a couple of matches, we were up to mark and close against Australia and England. But we couldn't cross the line.

"As a young captain, those games gave me a lot of boost. The weather didn't go in our favour against England and in the last two games.

"The ICC must arrange good venues for the World Cup because we have been waiting for four years."

Pakistan end their Women's World Cup campaign without winning any of their seven group games.

Meanwhile, co-hosts Sri Lanka finish with one win and three defeats in seven matches.

    Breaking

There is the official confirmation and it's not what we've wanted to hear.

The game has been called off due to rain.

It's a fifth game in Colombo that has been abandoned due to weather during this Women's World Cup.

The umpires have come out to take a look at the conditions and then had a chat with the curator before going back inside.

But the covers remain on large parts of the ground and there is the threat of more rain.

Hopefully, we will get an official word soon.

With the cut-off time (16:03 BST) less than an hour away, the ground staff are back on the field and the covers are coming off gradually.

But any more rain could be a major blow to our hopes of getting a game today.

As Catie has said, this tournament has been ruined. It’s the rainy season in Sri Lanka, so this was not unexpected to anyone, except the organisers!

    Nick, Dumfries and Galloway

It's desperately sad. It may be the only World Cup some of these players get to - and to me the result won't really be valid.

It’s a shame to say that this Cricket World Cup has been ruined by rain but it has. It’s been so unfair on teams that might otherwise have won games or had more of a chance. The organisers need to have a good look at themselves and how they decide when and where these tournaments are played.

Is it any surprise that rain has stopped proceedings in Colombo again!

Pakistan openers Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail had given their side a steady start in conditions that are not really ideal to play cricket on in Colombo.

Interestingly, the boundaries had been shortened at the R Premadasa Stadium to make play happen after the showers left parts of the outfield in a very bad state.

But after 26 balls, the covers are now back on at the venue as rain lashes Sri Lanka's capital.

  17. Postpublished at 13:47 BST 24 October

Off we go as Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail open the batting for Pakistan and Sri Lanka's Malki Madara has the ball in hand.

A reminder that this is going to be a 34 overs per side game with powerplay of seven overs.

So one bowler can bowl a maximum of six overs and four can bowl a maximum of seven.

If the weather is kind enough, Pakistan will be hoping to end their World Cup campaign with a first win after losing four of their six games so far in the group stage.

The rain played villain as they were denied a chance of a victory over England.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka had their semi-final hopes dashed by India last night but will hope to leave a mark on the tournament they are co-hosting with their second win today.

Australia, South Africa, England and India have made it to the semi-finals.
