    Out of nowhere!

Shoaib Bashir had just been thwacked for four by Sean Williams but a ball later the Zimbabwe left-hander inside-edges the ball onto his stumps.

Bashir has two wickets to his name.

Jacob Bethell was incredibly impressive in New Zealand. For such a young man to look so at home in Test cricket is quite rare. He could well have an incredibly long and successful Test career.

But given he has a first-class batting average of 29, without a hundred, and has only taken 10 wickets, there's an awful lot of talk about him walking straight back into the team.

  3. Zim 152-2published at 32 overs

Sam Cook ends this over down at 77mph. I have no problem with him being around 82mph but if that becomes a sustained drop-off it might be one to keep an eye on.

It's gone along beautifully for Brian Bennett.

He's enjoying his day in the sunshine.

That's a fifty partnership in only 10 overs and one ball.

Shoaib Bashir's heads rocks back and his eyes close at the impressive Brian Bennett chops him off the back foot for four more. Bennett nails a sweep at the end of the over too.

12 from the over and Bennett has 80 from 81 balls.

Sam Cook has been unlucky so far today, consistently beating the bat or drawing an edge. He has the highest false shot percentage drawn by any England bowler today: Sam Cook - 38% Josh Tongue - 33% Gus Atkinson - 14% Shoaib Bashir - 11%.

  8. Zim 139-2published at 30 overs

Sam Cook forces another edgy stroke - not quite a full nick but not controlled either - and it beats the diving fielder at gully, who is England skipper Ben Stokes.

It feels like the ball is going wherever Stokes does not put a fielder right now.

His frustrated expression tells you how he's feeling.

Shoaib Bashir is missing his length by a couple of feet here.

Maybe I'm being harsh because he hasn't actually bowled that many balls in Test cricket.

  10. Zim 131-2published at 29 overs

Tuffers is grumbling on TMS about Shoaib Bashir's lack of control. One ball is bang on the money but the next too short and the one after that down the leg side.

"He's missed his length by two feet," Tuffers says.

That's three times that it's gone through third slip. Thick outside edge, should've been taken.

Sam Cook's been a bit unlucky here today.

  12. Zim 129-2published at 28 overs

That's a really good over from Sam Cook. It was more accurate than his first spell.

Sam Cook is the first England Test bowler since Martin McCague in 1993 to bowl the first ball of the first innings on debut.

  14. Zim 129-2published at 27.3 overs

Edged through the slips again! Ben Stokes is doubled over at mid-off, bemoaning the lack of a third slip.

The ball would have gone straight to him and given Sam Cook a second Test wicket.

Brian Bennett is relishing the situation. He's getting himself into good positions and playing some great shots.

The way Zimbabwe have come out has been spot on. They've batted positively and really taken the game on.

We've had a lot of streets sent in. I want more random instances of things named after sports stars. Something to rival the Hadlee and Sobers waiting areas at Trent Bridge.

Shoaib Bashir completes a maiden, meanwhile. Better from him.

Not far from Trent Bridge, in Mapperley, you can find the 'World Cup Estate' - where you will find Ramsey Drive, Wembley Rd, Bonetti Close, etc. Ramsey Drive also leads to a cricket theme with Bradman, Cowdrey, Trueman and Sobers Gardens (they obviously ran out of footballers).

Brian Bennett can play, you know! He gets beauty by an absolute beauty from Josh Tongue but when the England quick, who has been up at 90mph in this spell, bangs in a bouncer he's there to pull it for four.

Tongue then aims at the stumps and 21-year-old Bennett drives through mid-on.

    Superb stuff.

Brian Bennett has been lovely to watch today and this beehive of his brief Test career shows how, in this case against pace, he loves to tuck into anything with width. He has also nicked off a couple of times too. As Robin in Coventry said earlier, James Vince vibes...
