The other thing to look out for is Shan Masood and how he handles the spin options. At times it confuses the script of who to use.

This will be a first for him from a captain's point of view to manage seven spinners.

Word from Multan is that Aamer Jamal is doing some bowling warm-ups.

England seamers were not only a wicket-taking threat but the two most economical bowlers.

    Pakistan will need Jamal.

The groundstaff are doing their thing as they brush the crease areas. The light roller is going on.

The saying "don't judge a pitch until both sides have batted on it" is ringing in my ears.

    What will England manage?

Remember Pakistan only have one seamer in their XI and there are doubts around his fitness. There are seven spin options for Shan Masood to get his head around using.

Pakistan's expected score in that innings was 338, according to Cricviz's metrics. That means 366 is above par.

Jack Leach finishes with 4-114 after the hard graft of 38.3 overs. Brydon Carse, for me, was the pick of the bowlers with 3-50 from 20.

This had to make the fence on the full otherwise it was going to be all over for Noman Ali.

Noman did a fabulous job with the bat, but now the onus is on Pakistan's spin attack.

Noman c Carse b Leach 32 (Pak 366 all out)

    And that is that.

Noman Ali has a big heave to Jack Leach and holes out at deep mid-wicket.

Pakistan are all out for 366. A good effort? Probably. But England will still fancy their chances of bettering it.

It would be good to see Rehan Ahmed play in the third Test in Bashir's place - his leggies and googlies might skid on more on these pitches.

Brydon Carse is having a rest. Jack Leach is back.

  11. Pak 366-9published at 123 overs

    Noman 32, Zahid 2

Basically if the ball is on a fourth stump line, Zahid Mahmood manages to poke and avoid edging it. When the ball is on the stumps he seems able to defend on the front foot.

There's not enough pace in the pitch to stop him lurching forward.

As an opening batter I imagine this is the most tricky passage of play.

You are concentrating on what's happening, but then you have to be able to flick the mindset.

We can only assume not, Kieran. Ben Stokes has not bowled at all today.

Before play today, there was a suggestion Stokes had extra strapping on his hamstring.

Why has Capt Stokes bowled only 5 overs, he is a game-changer. Is the injury not 100%?

  15. Pak 365-9published at 122 overs

    Noman 31, Zahid 2

After all of those swishes in the previous over, Noman Ali tries a ramp over wicketkeeper Jamie Smith off Brydon Carse. The result is pretty much the same - a dot ball.

Carse gets one delivery at Zahid Mahmood but Pakistan's number 11 defends.

Bashir's bowled around 30cms fuller today at an average length of 4.2m, compared to 4.5m yesterday. He's got the ball to turn more than Leach's though, 4.94° today compared to 3.87° yesterday. Bashir's accuracy has dropped too with 49% deliveries on a good line and length yesterday and 37% today.

Leach has been pretty consistent in comparison, 60% on a good line and length zone yesterday and 55% today. He's getting the ball to turn slightly more today with an average turn of 4.3° compared to 3.5° yesterday. He's also bowled slower which aids that extra turn. Average speed yesterday was 54.1mph, and down to 52mph today.

Frustration for Matthew Potts as the bearded Zahid Mahmood relocates the centre of his bat.

With a couple of tailenders out there you think, 'a couple of short ones and a straight one will do the trick'.

Matthew Potts is trying to go with the full straight plan to these tailenders. Zahid Mahmood is on strike which is what England will have wanted.

  19. Pak 363-9published at 120.4 overs

Having praised Zahid Mahmood's batting, he has now played and missed to Matthew Potts four deliveries in a row.

    Time for the big inswinger?

I mean Matthew Potts and Brydon Carse with that last comment by the way, although, who knows, Noman Ali could also be a Mackem...
