  1. Postpublished at 17:09 1 July

    Surrey 262 & 36-2 v Essex 180

The light is closing in at the Oval, where shadows are lengthening.

Dan Lawrence pushes Jamie Porter into the off side but there's no run.

Maiden over. We're playing on for now.

Or are we? The umpires are having a chat...

  2. Postpublished at 17:04 1 July

    Somerset 125-3 v Warwickshire 412

Lovely shot from Tom Banton, latching on to a wide half volley to thread the ball through cover point for four runs.

    He moves to 41.

That edge between first and second slip at the start of his innings now feels like a very distant memory.

  3. Postpublished at 17:03 1 July

    Durham 190 & 78-5 v Worcs 112 - Durham lead by 156

Tom Taylor lets rip a Stuart Broad-esque celeb appeal, arms spread wide, as he swings one into the pads of David Bedingham.

Perhaps doing too much. Not out.

Maiden - tidy stuff from Taylor who has 2-26 from 10.

  4. Postpublished at 17:01 1 July

    Surrey 262 & 32-2 v Essex 180

Eathan Bosch comes into the attack for the ninth over and his fifth ball is leg side and easily clipped round the corner by Jamie Smith for four runs.

Dan Lawrence works Shane Snater behind square leg for two.

Close! Snater pushes a ball out wide, Lawrence cuts and misses it to end the over as keeper Michael Pepper dives in front of first slip to take the ball.

Now the lights are on at the Oval...

  5. Durham lead passes 150published at 16:59 1 July

    Durham 190 & 77-5 v Worcs 112 - Durham lead by 155

David Bedingham has five red-ball centuries this season and is off the mark sixth ball with a lovely four.

He punches off the back foot to the last ball of Tom Taylor's over which takes Durham's lead to 150.

His next four is not so flowing as he gets a thick edge to Nathan Smith's second ball which zips past third slip to the third man boundary.

  6. WICKET Shaw b Hunt 37published at 16:59 1 July

    Northants 87-2 v Sussex - target 284

BIG, BIG wicket for Sean Hunt and Sussex.

With Prithvi Shaw in the middle and under 200 required for victory, Northants were favourites.

They might not be now. Hunt has been nagging away at Shaw and finally gets one to beat the bat and clatter the top of off to send the classy Indian on his way.

Emilio Gay is joined by Luke Procter, who made a golden duck in the first innings.

Eight wickets or 197 runs. Which comes first?

  7. Postpublished at 16:55 1 July

    Somerset 121-3 v Warwickshire 412

Somerset are biding there time here, picking off fractionally off line or full balls from the Michael Booth over to take six singles in all with minimal risk.

Tom Abell is forward to Chris Woakes, glancing a leg side ball from the all-rounder square for one.

    Single to Banton.

There's seam movement for Woakes, deviating the ball away from off stump but there's enough width to leave it alone.

  8. 'Leaning is a technically correct player'published at 16:54 1 July

    Hampshire 505-8d v Kent 106-4

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Jack Leaning has been a good player for quite a while.

When I first saw him at Yorkshire I always thought he was the technically correct player he is.

It's been a good move for him and a good signing for Kent.

  9. WICKET Evison c Brown b Abbas 15published at 16:54 1 July

    Hampshire 505-8d v Kent 106-4

Kent have been bubbling along at six an over but they are now four down and still 249 runs away from making Hampshire bat again.

Wily old Mo Abbas has his second victim, getting Evison to play at a rising delivery just outside off and nicking through to keeper Ben Brown.

Tawanda Muyeye is next in, joining Jack Leaning who is unbeaten on 18.

So much depends on Leaning now, in his first appearance for seven weeks after a broken hand.

  10. Close of play at Chesterfieldpublished at 16:54 1 July

    Derbyshire 76 v Yorkshire 416-6

The rain has beaten us at Queen's Park as the umpires call it a day.

Jonathan Tattersall will go to bed unbeaten on 93 and thinking about a third first-class century of his career.

This morning he put on 241 for the sixth wicket with James Wharton who was finally out for a superb 188, soon after a brief resumption following rain.

Yorkshire won't be unduly concerned by the delay - they are a mammoth 340 runs ahead on first innings and still have two days to secure a second Division Two win of the season.

  11. WICKET Burns c Harmer b Snater 8published at 16:49 1 July

    Surrey 262 & 25-2 v Essex 180

Dan Lawrence whips Jamie Porter away through mid wicket for two.

It looks a little gloomy here but we're fine to continue for now.

Out! Shane Snater strike for Essex!

It's a beauty that angles in, seams, takes the outside edge of the bat of Rory Burns - and the ball flies to Simon Harmer at second slip.

    Play that!

Jamie Smith is in next. Can he repeat his fine first innings form?

  12. Postpublished at 16:48 1 July

    Durham 190 & 62-5 v Worcs 112 - Durham lead by 140

You don't see runners too much these days, but it usually adds a bit of spice and confusion.

David Bedingham needs 91 runs to be the first batter to reach the 1,000 mark for the championship season, but a nagging hamstring niggle might rule that out in this match.

Colin Ackermann takes a single from Taylor's first ball after the resumption before Bedingham plays out four dots.

Nathan Smith in from the Lumley End.

  13. 100 up for Kentpublished at 16:47 1 July

    Hampshire 505-8d v Kent 106-3

Hampshire hit 71 boundaries in their 130 overs... Kent have 20 already in 17.1 overs.

Joey Evison finds the rope in consecutive deliveries from Kyle Abbott to bring up three-figures for his side.

Small goals ticked off one by one, that's the order of the day for the visitors.

  14. Postpublished at 16:44 1 July

    Somerset 110-3 v Warwickshire 412

A bit of a freak delivery from Chris Woakes, who gets a very full ball to lift sharply outside off stump, evading bat and keeper for two byes.

Banton gets a single off the last ball of the over and stands in the crease to smack Oliver Hannon-Dalby through cover point for four.

That shot takes the fourth wicket partnership to 50 in 89 balls.

  15. Play resumes at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 16:43 1 July

    Durham 190 & 61-5 v Worcs 112 - Durham lead by 139

We're finally back on after virtually all of the afternoon session was lost to rain.

Tom Taylor will bowl the final five balls of his earlier, over curtailed by rain, as the Pears look to bundle out the hosts before the target gets too big.

They won't want to chase many more than the 139 they already trail by.

David Bedingham, who has yet to face a ball, and Colin Ackermann are at the crease.

There's 28 overs left today and plenty can happen in that time if the game follows the same manic tempo that we've already seen.

  16. Rain stops play at Grace Roadpublished at 16:42 1 July

    Leics 179 & 311-8 v Middx 86 - Leics lead by 404

They're off for rain for the third time in Leicester and Middlesex won't mind that.

Ben Green was just five away from his 50 in a 71-run stand with Ben Mike which must be exasperating for those of a Middlesex persuasion.

  17. Postpublished at 16:41 1 July

    Surrey 262 & 22-1 v Essex 180

Shane Snater is angling the ball into Rory Burns from round the wicket and the Surrey captain defends.

Burns flicks a short ball off his hip round the corner for four.

Burns picks up one pushing into the off side and Dan Lawrence is off the mark in style, driving down the ground for four.

  18. Postpublished at 16:40 1 July

    Northants 65-1 v Sussex - target 284

One an over isn't the most daunting required run rate... however when it's spread over 219 overs across three days it's a different proposition entirely.

After 31 wickets fell in five sessions, none have gone down in more than 10 overs for the hosts now. Maybe the pitch, and the game, are calming down at the perfect time for them.

Emilio Gay has 34 with Prithvi Shaw on 23. Their partnership is 47.

  19. Postpublished at 16:37 1 July

    Somerset 101-3 v Warwickshire 412

Tom Banton has a bit of luck as he is stuck on the crease by Chris Woakes, edging low and wide past third slip for four.

He leans into a dreamy cover drive for four two balls later and the Somerset 100 comes in 29 overs.

  20. 'Essex will need to plug the gap left by Jordan Cox'published at 16:37 1 July

    Surrey 262 & 13-1 v Essex 180

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

So, no Jordan Cox for Essex for at least the next two weeks while he recuperates from his surgery and they have got some important T20 Blast matches coming-up.

You do wonder if the Essex coaching staff might have an eye on what loanee Feroze Khushi is doing for Kent and possibly look at recalling him.

He has a century under his belt for Essex this season and a devastating half-century late in the day against Lancashire helped set-up a win.

They will need to plug the gap left by Cox, with Robin Das also waiting in the wings.
