  1. Pak 36-1published at 9 overs

Durham's Brydon Carse is sporting some blonde highlights in his hair while his right arm remains packed with tattoos. He's very much the modern fast bowler.

As we saw against Australia last month, he can get it up to 90mph and does so here with Shan Masood looking just a little uncertain.

No runs come from Carse's first over in Tests.

The best time to bowl is right now, in the first session.

It's a now or never situation for a seamer because once the moisture goes, it will be quite a placid track.

Here's Brydon Carse, bowling for the first time on his Test debut...

  4. Pak 36-1published at 8 overs

    Shafique 19, Masood 12

Shan Masood gets away with one here as he tries to flick Gus Atkinson into a big gap on the leg side but the ball skews 180 degrees from where he was aiming.

Atkinson's pace has been decent so far without being express.

Abdullah Shafique has been striking the ball quite nicely. That's a lovely straight drive.

  6. Pak 31-1published at 7.2 overs

Abdullah Shafique eases Gus Atkinson back past his bootlaces now in the shot of the day so far. Those spectators hiding in the shade enjoyed that one.

There is a very small crowd in today. A lot of them have perched themselves under the covered part of one of the stands.

It's a very hot day so you can understand why they want to be in the shade but they're making a good noise.

  8. Pak 27-1published at 7 overs

As a huge kite circles over Zak Crawley's head at extra cover, Abdullah Shafique drives elegantly off the back foot to put some stomp into Chris Woakes' walk.

England have three slips waiting despite the lack of swing but Woakes drifts onto the pads at the end of the over too.

    10 from it.

Good start from England, they've been relatively disciplined with line and length.

But this surface does look a good one so they'll hope to keep making those inroads this morning to make this afternoon a touch more manageable.

  10. Pak 17-1published at 6 overs

    Shafique 8, Masood 5

I did have to carry some TMS radio kit around the Caribbean recently. That did feel like pressure.

Tight lines again from Gus Atkinson.

Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique are the first pair of specialist batters to have seven consecutive single-figure stands for any wicket.

That's not a great record to be part of, is it?

Never mind the stats, every one of Smith's victims should have an assist to Zaltzman following the heroic delivery of a pair of wicketkeeping pads.

It's that extra bounce from Gus Atkinson. He bowls from such a tall release height that even those balls down the leg side can climb a bit.

  14. Pak 10-1published at 4 overs

Shan Masood, the captain of Pakistan and newly-promoted Yorkshire, is out at number three.

Looking at the replay that definitely flicks Saim Ayub's glove. A lovely start for England on a flat pitch.

They have fallen for fewer than 10 and Zaltz has a record, a day after his 50th birthday!

A disappointing way to get out, caught down the leg side on what looks a pretty flat pitch. A bonus for Atkinson.

And there you go! Andy Zaltzman delivering for England.

Saim Ayub gets a snick - maybe bat or maybe even glove - on a ball down the leg side from Gus Atkinson. Jamie Smith is there to gobble up the catch.

England have their first. It's Atkinson's first wicket overseas.

This is the seventh time this pair - Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique - have opened for Pakistan and they've yet to post a 10-run partnership.

If they fail to do so today, it will set a new all-time Test record for an opening pair of consecutive partnerships in single figures.

Lovely balance. Woakes was trying to drift the ball across the left-hander.

He dangled a couple of carrots outside off stump, this one was a touch straighter and Saim Ayub just leant into it.

  19. Pak 5-0published at 3 overs

Chris Woakes beats left-hander Saib Ayub outside his off stump but the Pakistan opener responds by driving smartly through the covers for the game's first four to end the over.

That hint of swing I mentioned? It's no longer hinting.
