Summary

  1. Pak 77-1published at 16.1 overs

    Chance!

Abdullah Shafique misjudges a run horribly and would have been a mile out had Ollie Pope's throw hit.

Pope is not far away from the stumps but had to dive forward and aim at one stump. Not easy but a definite chance.

Really encouraging for Bashir. As a bowler, that's what you want to see the batter doing.

A bit of a slog. He's going to get four but that is not a pretty shot.

If I was Bashir, I wouldn't be too worried about that.

  4. Pak 76-1published at 16 overs

    Shafique 34, Masood 36

Shoaib Bashir continues and sneaks the ball onto Shan Masood's front pad. England go up for an appeal and when it's turned down attention switches to stand-in skipper Ollie Pope.

You may remember he failed with all 10 of his reviews when deputising for Ben Stokes against Sri Lanka but he's got this one right. It would have missed leg stump.

Masood responds by biffing the next two for four.

It'll be interesting to see how many overs Carse bowls doing that. Will it be two or three and then they get someone else to bowl bouncers?

England are going short very early. We've had barely an hour's play.

  7. Pak 67-1published at 15 overs

We don't get many Reverend's messaging in. Now I'm wondering if Andy Zaltzman had a sneaky try of Jamie Smith's pads after taking delivery.

On the field, England have already decided there's little else happening so it's time to bang in bouncers. One from Brydon Carse thuds into Shan Masood's arm.

A friend was being consecrated as a Bishop in Uganda. He ordered all his robes from the UK and asked me to bring them out for him. I was so tempted to try for an upgrade at check-in by wearing the full regalia, mitre (pointy hat), cope (gold cloak) and all. I didn't.

There's a bit of yelping from England's fielders but not a lot of spin for Shoaib Bashir. Having watched the first hour, I wouldn't go making plans for day five. This could be a long one.

The players are having a drink and the one enjoying it the most must be Zak Crawley, he's had to chase everything.

He normally fields in the slips but he's had a broken finger so they're clearly protecting him and he's chased everything.

We're going to get some spin for the first time after drinks. Shoaib Bashir is lurking.

It's 31 days since the start of England's third Test against Sri Lanka at the Oval, 28 since the end of it.

That's the shortest gap they have ever had between their last home Test of a summer and the first away Test of the winter.

That is drinks, by the way - much-needed in this heat.

England will be pretty happy. It looks a flat pitch and, having lost the toss, they've taken the one wicket courtesy of Gus Atkinson.

  14. Pak 56-1published at 13 overs

This has been a decent start to his Test career from Brydon Carse. There was almost the wicket in that previous over and now Shan Masood swishes and misses at one. Has the pace unsettled him a little? Maybe.

  15. Pak 50-1published at 12 overs

    Shafique 26, Masood 18

It'd be a pretty boring game if bowlers just hurled everything from round the wicket at the pads, Tom.

Worst rule in cricket, absolutely no reason for pitched outside leg to have any impact on LBW, if it’s hitting the stumps it’s hitting the stumps.

Ben Stokes, out injured today, was living every moment of that review. He was ready to celebrate with his Durham team-mate Brydon Carse.

I think this is a question of where it has pitched... pitching outside.

It is not Brydon Carse's first Test wicket.

  19. Not outpublished at 06:51 British Summer Time

What do I know?! It has pitched just a tiny smidge outside leg stump.

    Shan Masood survives.

Excellent tactics from Carse because this was nice and full and at pace.

I think it will be out because it looked very, very close.
