    A real rarity today as Chris Woakes beats the bat of Abdullah Shafique to end the over.

    It certainly wasn't extravagant movement but even a couple of centimetres is more than England have had to work with so far.

    He is willing to give the ball a bit of flight and finds Abdullah Shafique's inside edge with a nice delivery that dips and turns a fraction from outside off.

    Banged in short (shock horror) by Gus Atkinson and Abdullah Shafique doesn't get hold of the pull shot at all - but it bounces just short of leg slip, beats him and runs away for four.

    Another boundary to end the over, this time a lovely back-foot punch through the covers from Abdullah.

    Pakistan are going along very nicely indeed.

    Last time we toured Pakistan, both Pakistan openers hit centuries and they were 200-0 (and then 400-3) in their first innings of the first test. Let's give this team some time before criticising the selection.

    Sweetly struck to move into the 90s and bring up the 150 partnership with Abdullah Shafique.

    Abdullah Shafique is playing his role perfectly, Shan Masood is playing like it's a one man game.

    They're both frustrating England in a different way and it's working well for them.

    The batters are on top and as a bowling unit you are trying to break that partnership.

    Expensive as it may be, I have sympathy with England for using the short ball ploy here. On a pitch as placid as this, it does feel the more likely route to a batting error than bowling length.

    England do now have a catching cordon with Gus Atkinson bowling - it's just a ring of four of them in front of square on the leg side waiting for a pull shot.

    That becomes three as a leg slip goes in. Ollie Pope keeps tinkering with the tourists doing anything they can to make the batters think and possibly second guess themselves.

    So far, to no avail. Both Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood are playing with near-complete control.

    At the end of each over, they have to either hoist or lower a white sheet covering the black screen, then wheel in or out and video advertising board.

    I don't think he's looking for a six, but he still got it.

    Short ball after short ball with the field spread. Shan Masood is very comfortable, though, and lifts the last ball of the over for six over fine leg.

    Little more than a third of the way through the day and this already looks like being a gruelling day for the bowlers.
