England made a nightmare start to the chase as Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge both fell for ducks, before Sophia Dunkley played a brilliant innings.

On her first appearance of the tour Dunkley played with the kind of aggressive intent hitherto unseen by England batters in this series.

However, when she was dismissed for 59 from 30 balls it signalled the beginning of the end. England kept up with the rate, but ran out of wickets.

England cost themselves 20 runs in the field just with silly mistakes. There was a clear difference between the England and Australia fielding and there has been all series.

A quick recap of what's happened...

Australia whacked a commanding 198-7 from their 20 overs, spearheaded by Beth Mooney's 75 from 51 balls. Phoebe Litchfield caught the eye with a brilliant switch hit for six.

Sophie Ecclestone took 2-26 but once again England were left to rue blunders in the field.

Australia spinner Georgia Wareham: "The girls are pretty pumped, but the job's not done, we want to win it outright. We always strive to keep on winning games, that'd be great.

"Beth Mooney was so good with the bat, kicked us off really nicely. Sophia Dunkley whacked them today, that was a bit nerve-wracking.

"It's awesome having another leggie in the team. We can bounce ideas off another out there. We'd like to keep pushing our scores up. There's still bits we can touch up."

Australia have been dominant in all four games in this series so far. They all have smiles on their faces, they knew what the outcome was going to be.

Sophia Dunkley's fearless approach from number three was all the more impressive considering England had suffered another top-order failure, with openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge falling for ducks in the first two overs.

England's Dunkley smashes 22 runs off one over

England batter Sophia Dunkley speaking to TNT Sports: "I think we're just really disappointed, we wanted to bring a lot of energy and we fell quite short. I wanted to go out there and give it my best shot and put the pressure on Australia. We can still draw the Ashes, it's not completely gone, so we'll focus on that.

"Over the last 18 months I've focused on changing my grip, a lot mentally too, being a bit smarter with my options. It's nice to see it's paid off a bit tonight.

"Sometimes I can over-hit it and try and hit the ball too hard, it's trying to get that balance with timing. If I'm going to get out I'm going to get out giving it a good go rather than poking at it.

"We've got to keep bringing that positive energy, there were moments when we played really well and we've just got to keep them going for longer."

Player of the match Beth Mooney: "We felt confident with 198 on the board. We lost our way in the middle and at the back end. You always feel you can get more runs, but that’s probably just me being critical!

"Our bowlers did an excellent job to contain the innings. The wicket stayed quite flat throughout and didn’t play too many tricks on us. The problem solving aspect of the game is something I really enjoy and I had to find a way around some of the England bowlers. But I was happy to put some impetus into the team and everyone played their part.

"I couldn’t be more proud of Georgia Voll, getting her debut today. She came out and took the game on from ball one and it’s so exciting for us to get this win."

I think it’s time for a new coach and captain. England have stagnated. Knight has taken England as far as she can and Lewis hasn’t been able to build anything. Perhaps now is the time for Charlotte Edwards?

  13. 'We gave them 20-30 too many runs'published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

England captain Heather Knight: "I thought it was an outstanding innings by Beth Mooney. She makes it so hard to bowl at when she's like that, she moves around the crease, makes it really hard for the bowlers to execute. We probably gave them 20-30 too many runs, if we'd kept them to 20-30 less and a little bit more in the field I think we'd have been in with a real shout. Sophia Dunkley gave us a chance with the way she batted, it was such a brilliant wicket, I felt like it was on but just a little bit of missed execution and if we'd kept them to 20-30 less we'd have been in the game for sure.

"We felt like we were in it, particularly when Dunkley was going. She's really smart with her options, just hitting down the ground, I felt like we were getting a partnership together and unfortunately I probably went to the wrong option and broke that. But I thought she was outstanding, in her first game of the trip as well, played with that freedom, showed what she can do and she has such a free swing that she hits the ball so cleanly and it's beautiful to watch. Frustrating today, but I guess we move onto the next one."

England's bowling and fielding was again of far too low a standard under pressure. Pleased for Sophia Dunkley, but for the rest I am afraid the big occasion has got to them once again.

Australia retain the Ashespublished at 11:31 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

An emphatic 57-run victory for Australia means they retain the Ashes in this multi-format series.

There's two T20s and a one-off Test match still to play, but even if England win all those they will be level on eight points with the Aussies.

As the holders of the trophy, Australia will keep it even in the case of a drawn series.

This shows that to match Australia you can't just meet their effort, you have go beyond it. You have to give so much more than you think just to be up there with them.
