Noman Ali's mammoth spell ends at 23 overs so, after a whole five overs of recovery, Sajid Khan is back on for Pakistan.

200 seems a realistic target now, match Pakistan's first innings score in the second innings, and set Pakistan 200 in the fourth innings. Until we have seen both teams bat on the pitch, we can't be sure the pitch is the problem.

I've no idea what a good score is on here.

Maiden from Zahid Mahmood, who has settled well having eventually been introduced to the attack, and it's time for drinks.

A fairly even first hour of the afternoon session. England lost Ben Stokes early on but Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson have dug in.

They've put on 40 so far to help the tourists rebuild.

The 42 overs unbroken by the opening bowlers is the longest that a pair of bowlers have bowled at the start of a Test innings since 1965 - England's Ian Thompson and Ken Parker bowled unchanged for about 50 overs.

    Love your confidence, Tim.

I'm sure such a declaration from Ben Stokes would be met with an extremely measured reaction.

I mean when has he ever made a bold declaration that has come back to bite him and England?

Why is everyone so glum? Stokes will declare on 180 and then Jack Leach will skittle them for 120. We barely need a second innings!

Nice from Zahid Mahmood as he rips one past Gus Atkinson.

The England man is slightly unsure whether to play forward or back to the leg-spinner but gets some luck with a thick inside edge that runs into a gap to bring him two.

A more control push off the back foot earns him a single to end the over.

What next for Shan Masood and Pakistan? There must be tiring fingers and bodies among these spinners. Masood needs to understand the value of rest.

Noman Ali must be thinking Sajid Khan is slacking a bit here.

The off-spinner came off after bowling 21 straight overs, the left-arm spinner is having none of it.

He continues into his 22nd and concedes just two from it. Will be just go all day? Don't rule it out.

  11. Eng 152-6published at 43 overs

    Smith 30, Atkinson 11

Decent first over from Zahid Mahmood and he'll take encouragement from his last delivery.

Pitches on leg stump but turns to take a leading edge from Gus Atkinson.

The ball lands safely, though, much to Atkinson's relief.

Something quite remarkable is happening, someone other than Sajid Khan or Noman Ali is about to bowl.

What's this? Have Pakistan picked a third bowler?

It turns out they have. After 42 overs, we have the first bowling change of the innings.

The extremely patient Zahid Mahmood comes on to replace Sajid Khan. What has the leggie got?

That was a top quality delivery.

  15. Eng 150-6published at 42 overs

    How has that missed?

Noman Ali has his hands on his knees and has no idea how he hasn't dismissed Gus Atkinson.

He does the England man in the flight, getting the ball to dip late again, then turns it away.

It's no more than a couple of millimetres from the bat and no further away from the off stump. Brilliant spin bowling.

Definitely think England have needed to show a bit more nous so far in this match. It's not like Pakistan's pitch preparations were carried out behind closed doors.

Sajid Khan has now bowled 21 overs, is it time for a change?

  18. Eng 147-6published at 41 overs

Jamie Smith gets down and lap-sweeps for two to keep England ticking over.

After 18 from his last two overs, might Sajid Khan finally be tiring slightly after such a lengthy spell?

Beautiful shot. You've got to enjoy the timing because so many batters have struggled with that today.

Another fabulous shot from Jamie Smith.

Lovely timing to drive Sajid Khan through extra cover for four.

That prompts a change of angle for the off-spinner, who will have a go from round the wicket.
