That's it from us for today. There was a lot of talk about this Rawalpindi pitch pre-match and that is unlikely to change given what we've seen on day one.

Jamie Smith and late wickets for Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach and Gus Atkinson mean England just about have the edge going into day two.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report on a first day that veered one way then the other right here.

We'll be back bright and early tomorrow when England will be hunting quick wickets to press home their advantage.

Make sure you join us then because this match is moving at some pace!

Ollie Pope is in a really curious place. For someone who has scored three hundreds in a calendar year he has the lowest average. It is feast or famine for him.

Smith's ability to be calm at the beginning of his innings suggests to me he has a future up the order. How do you get him there?

If Pope were to be dropped, which would be a very interesting thing for them to consider in New Zealand, asking Root to go up to number three might be the solution to leave Brook at four, Smith at five and Stokes at six.

Clearly England like and back Pope but is he batting out of position at number three? Probably.

  3. 'We need to keep building pressure'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 24 October

England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, speaking to Sky Sports: "We just went with the flow of the game, we could tell the bowlers were tired at times because they were bowling continuously.

"We thought how could we flip ends or get a new bowler on, Gus [Atkinson] flipped that switch first, I was glad to be out there with him. I felt they changed their plan a bit and went wider for me.

"It felt like they bowled nicely at the start. They bowled in line, a few people got caught lbw.

"There's enough left on this wicket for us to take more wickets, we just need to keep building the pressure."

Sajid has brought some passion. He ignited the series in the second Test by bringing an energy to Pakistan that they didn't have.

He varied his pace today. He was wily in using his pace, enticing the sweep and then would fire the odd quicker one in. He said to the batters they can take the risk by premeditating the sweep but if they pick the wrong one I will hit the pad or stumps.

Once again, the man to really make the most of those conditions for Pakistan was Sajid Khan.

The off-spinner finished with figures of 6-128 in 29.2 overs, including 21 on the trot to start the innings.

Day one PitchViz rating of 6.8 makes this the toughest pitch to bat on day one in any Test in Pakistan.

The average deviation (seam and spin) of 4.17 degrees on display today was also the highest for any Test on day one in the ball-tracking era (doesn't include Tests in India).

Pace wise, it was the third-slowest day one pitch we have ever seen.

Alarm set early for tomorrow morning, car booked back at the garage for an 8:30 drop off. Hopefully we’ll be battling again by then. Doing my bit for England.

Last week the best way to score runs was sweep. It would have been difficult to park that against the same bowlers. Maybe England took a little too long to work that out.

Ben Duckett was one of the few players who was bowled out rather than contributing to their wicket. He could do little about the one that kept low and hit him on the boot.

Despite the difficulties this pitch gave the batters for much of the day, Jamie Smith showed that it is possible to score runs on this surface.

He played it superbly, taking his time to get in and acclimatised to the conditions before really going after the Pakistan spinners.

A century just alluded him but if England do go on to win this match, his innings will be viewed as a huge part in it.

I felt the pitch would play better than it did at the start of the day. The first ball turned down the leg side and we looked at each other.

When Duckett got one that rolled along the floor it sent the spooks through England.

It has not been a great first day wicket. I imagine the match referee will look at it.

So England just about with the edge then at the end of day one.

That seemed unlikely when they slipped to 118-6 shortly after lunch but a stand of 105 between Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson helped them get up to a more competitive 267.

Pakistan's reply started well but three quick wickets mean the tourists are in a decent position on a pitch that will only get tougher to bat on.

There has been a lot of talk about the pitch and it turned from the first ball of the day. Wickets have fallen regularly.

    England will be pretty happy.

  14. Close of play - Pak 73-3published at 23 overs

    Trail by 194

Good over from Rehan Ahmed to end an excellent day's Test cricket.

It's been an up and down one for England but after Jamie Smith's superb 89 and then those three wickets in the evening session, they end it with the upper hand.

  16. Pak 72-3published at 22.1 overs

So nearly a wicket first up from Rehan Ahmed!

The ball turns back to Shan Masood and stays very low. The Pakistan skipper just gets his bat down in time.

I love this from Ben Stokes, chuck the youngster the ball at the end of the day, focus on tomorrow.

  18. Pak 72-3published at 22 overs

    Masood 15, Shakeel 16

A couple of freebies in the over from Shoaib Bashir but he ends it well with a quicker one that Saud Shakeel just gets his bat on in time.

It's a floatier, full delivery to finish but Shakeel is forward to defend.

One over left in the day and Rehan Ahmed is coming on to bowl it...

39% of Gus Atkinson's deliveries were projected to hit the stumps in the three overs that he bowled today. For comparison, the corresponding figure for him in the first Test in Multan was just 9%. It is still a low sample size but the 39% is currently the highest for any English pacer in a Test innings in Asia.

  20. Pak 68-3published at 21 overs

    Trail by 199

Three singles from the Joe Root over and Pakistan have officially avoided the follow-on.

Not that England would have enforced it on this pitch, even in the highly unlikely event that they had bowled Pakistan out for 67 or fewer.
