Bowling change for England. It's time for Joe Root. Can his golden arm do the trick for the hosts again?

The 100 partnership comes up in 24.2 overs.

  3. SL 193-5published at 41 overs

Kamindu Mendis rocks back and slaps the ball out to the fielding sweeping on the off side to bring up the 100 partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva.

They've done an excellent job for Sri Lanka to help them recover from a less than ideal position.

Fair play to the umpires today.

It felt like yesterday they took the easy way out.

  5. SL 190-5published at 40 overs

Four more for Dhananjaya de Silva as he guides the ball down to the deep third boundary.

It's not getting any lighter, England seem content to continue with their spinners so on we go...

    Ooh. Nearly for Dan Lawrence.

England take out mid-off, dangling the carrot for Kamindu Mendis and the left-hander takes the bait immediately.

He skips down and attempts a big shot but sending the ball spiralling into the off side. Fortunately for Sri Lanka, it drops short of the fielder in the deep.

  7. SL 185-5published at 39 overs

Another over goes by without any suggestion that England might be close to taking a wicket.

That leads to a discussion between Ollie Pope and a few others but whatever was said, they're going to carry on for now.

Lawrence's bowling action reminds me of a description of the American golfer Jim Furyk's swing-like an octopus falling out of a tree.

Sri Lanka continue to chip away at England's lead.

There has been some turn for the spinners but the home side look like they will have a decision to make about when to say 'enough is enough' in terms of continuing.

These are good conditions for the seamers and while they're not able to use them, they might be better not bowling at all...

  10. 50 runs

50 for Dhananjaya de Silvapublished at 37.4 overs

    SL 184-5

Cut away for four by Dhananjaya de Silva - and that takes him to his 17th Test half-century.

He had a big let off on 23 but he's made the most of it and has started to accelerate in the past few overs.

I wonder how long England will do this for.

They don't want to be overconfident.

  12. SL 178-5published at 37 overs

Excellent fielding from Chris Woakes to chase down another lovely drive from Dhananjaya de Silva and flick it back just before the boundary cushion.

It's four from the Shoaib Bashir over. He's bowled OK in this spell and should have had a wicket. We've just seen a replay of him consoling Josh Hull with a smile at the end of that over, so he's taken it better than some bowlers would.

That was all about timing and placement.

    Really well played.

  14. SL 174-5published at 36 overs

Too wide from Dan Lawrence and Dhananjaya de Silva strokes it elegantly through the covers for four.

That takes the partnership to 81. How costly might that drop a couple of overs back prove?

This was taken when the seamers were on earlier. England can't be accused of being defensive in the field!

Full toss from Shoaib Bashir and Dhananjaya de Silva gleefully thumps it through the covers for four.

Gus Atkinson tried to get round but missed the ball completely with his dive and attempted flick.

A dab down to deep third brings two more before Dhananjaya keeps strike with a single into the covers.

I wonder how much longer England will persist with the spinners? The alternative is walking off the field, which would not be a popular choice...

  17. SL 161-5published at 34 overs

The crowd go up as the ball carries to Harry Brook at leg slip with Dhananjaya de Silva trying to flick Dan Lawrence to leg.

England appeal but decide against a review when it is turned down. Looks like it came off the pad.

Next ball, the Sri Lanka captain advances again and pumps the ball back down the ground. One bounce for four.

Dhananjaya was looking to make something happen and Josh Hull has dropped an absolute sitter.

    Poor Josh Hull.

  19. dropped catch

Dhananjaya dropped on 23published at 33 overs

    SL 152-5

    Oh no.

Josh Hull, on debut, has dropped a dolly at mid-on.

Shoaib Bashir tempts Dhananjaya de Silva into a big shot. The Sri Lanka skipper dances down the track, miscues the shot and it loops kindly to Hull.

However, the big left-armer makes a real mess of it and the ball goes to ground.

England aren't really getting movement on the ball and Sri Lanka aren't really taking England on.

We're in a bit of a stalemate period at the moment.
