I sense that this could be quite a gentle session. The pitch isn't doing much.

I can imagine that Kim Garth just has to pinch herself sometimes considering the progress that she's made this summer.

  3. Eng 37-1published at 18 overs

After overpitching earlier in the over, Kim Garth's fourth ball to Heather Knight is a bouncer. The England skipper resists the urge to whack it and instead controls a pull behind square for a couple.

A nip-backer off the penultimate ball of over from Garth hits Knight on her inner thigh, prompting encouraging cheers from the Aussie fielders.

  4. Eng 35-1published at 17.1 overs

    Classy shot by Heather Knight.

Slightly full from Kim Garth and Knight times a beautiful on-drive which races all the way along the carpet to the boundary for four.

    One for the purists.

Tammy Beaumont is such a likeable, high-energy player.

  6. Eng 31-1published at 17 overs

Annabel Sutherland is relentless in probing Tammy Beaumont outside her off stump and beats the outside edge a few times. There's the unerring sense she's waiting to zip one back into the England opener's front pat when it's planted in front of stump.

That ball is only getting older. I think we'll start to see some spin soon.

The Aussies know that if they get a breakthrough, they'll see the whole English team.

  9. Eng 31-1published at 16 overs

Kim Garth, who made her international debut for Ireland as a 14-year-old before moving to Australia to pursue a professional cricket career, is on the money.

Tammy Beaumont nudges one into the leg side to pick up single but slim pickings for England in the remainder of the over.

There's not as much bounce in this pitch as there was on day one.

  11. Eng 30-1published at 15 overs

    Trail by 240 runs

Heather Knight gives the pitch a bit of a tap between deliveries as she shows the bat maker's name to Annabel Sutherland with some resolute defensive prods.

The Aussie all-rounder starts with a maiden, but there does not appear to many demons in this surface for the seam bowlers at the moment.

England need to be prepared to do that little bit extra here today.

    Thanks, Sam.

While they keep wickets in hand there's hope for England. But as we know, it's the hope that gets you.

Anyway, Annabel Sutherland is at the top of her mark with the pink ball in hand. Heather Knight is on strike.

Can England build on one good session with another? That's all they can try and do in this situation.

To take you through the evening session, it's over to Timothy Abraham.

Maia Bouchier is low on confidence from this tour. She's not moving her feet, she's not sure if the ball is moving away or in. Darcie Brown bowls with good pace as well so you have to be really on it. She hasn't been and loses her middle stump.

Australia thought they might have a second wicket just before the break when Kim Garth hit Tammy Beaumont on the pad.

They sent it upstairs for an lbw review, only to be told that DRS was down.

Frustration for the home side but they kept their review and I fancy the on-field decision would have stood anyway had DRS been working.

The beauty of the situation is that I cannot be proved wrong in that assertion...

England did lose an early wicket in their second innings as Maia Bouchier was bowled by Darcie Brown.

A trying tour for the England opener with the bat has now come to an end.

England soon got into their work, though, and took the last five Australia wickets for just 18 runs.

Sophie Ecclestone took three of them to complete a five-wicket haul and Lauren Filer claimed the other two.

Stephen Vincent: The England women have been superb this morning watching here in Melbourne, they've had the best of the first session, well done on a gritty display and especially Sophie Ecclestone, a well deserved five-wicket haul.
