    Off they go.

The umpires think it has got too dark.

The umpires are coming together... This could be bad news.

Ben Duckett has played fantastically here.

To start he was playing shots that were a little bit risky in these conditions but he's got into his groove.

  4. 50 runs

50 for Ben Duckettpublished at 15 overs

Ben Duckett thrashes very hard at short ball as he goes to fifty from 48 balls. The fielder gets a hand on it and looks down at his hand, I think just checking to see there isn't a cricket ball-shaped hole in his palm.

The England balcony are beating their hands to applaud the opener.

Duckett played that guide to third man from the first ball after drinks. It was a fantastic stroke, but could quite easily have bounced, moved and taken an edge. If Sri Lanka get the ball in the right place, the catchers should come into play. Instead, Dhananjaya immediately dropped point back to the boundary. Following the ball is poor captaincy.

  6. Eng 73-1published at 14 overs

There are a couple of raindrops on the camera lens but nothing to half play as yet.

Lahiru Kumara has just bowled the first maiden of the day.

  7. Postpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 6 September

This probably sums up Ben Duckett's mood best...

It looks like they'll have a big electricity bill today.

  9. Eng 73-1published at 13 overs

    Duckett 48, Pope 14

Finally a well-bowled delivery from Sri Lanka's seamers. Ben Duckett nods in approval after playing a missing. It hasn't got any less gloomy. The floodlights are beating down.

Mike McMahon: First morning of a Test match in these conditions and England ticking along at 5+ an over... will never get used to that!

  11. Eng 73-1published at 12.3 overs

Slashed for four! Too short and too wide.

Ben Duckett is on the charge.

  12. Eng 69-1published at 12.1 overs

Straight after drinks Sri Lankan hands are back on heads as Duckett fiddles the ball through a gap in the slips.

I thought this pitch was going to do all sorts with the clouds and the moisture.

It hasn't done a great deal, there's no pace on the ball and it's bouncing like a tennis ball.

Ollie Pope looks like he's come in wanting to get something done.

  15. 6 runs

    Eng 65-1published at 12 overs

'Under pressure', in dark and gloomy conditions, just got to the crease...

Just go and smack your 12th ball for six! A great pull shot from Ollie Pope.

That's drinks and England have had the better start even with that Lawrence dismissal.

Can't help but feel playing Lawrence in these Tests has been a waste. Could have exposed younger players or openers to Test cricket.

It was not a pretty way for Dan Lawrence to go...

  18. Eng 54-1published at 11 overs

Ollie Pope plays another good cut shot but Dhananjaya de Silva has gone all Pat Cummins and put a fielder on that boundary.

You can't help but feel for Dan Lawrence. Yes, you jump at any opportunity to play for England, but he's warming a seat in an unfamiliar position. As soon as that went up, he dropped his head in disappointment, because he knew his fate. He may have played himself off the winter tours.

  20. Eng 54-1published at 10.1 overs

Ollie Pope gets a wide one and helps himself to four runs on the cut.

    A nerve-settler?
