Track World Championships: Laura Trott keeps GB hopes alive

Olympic champion Laura Trott maintained hopes of a British gold at the Track World Championships by moving up to third on day one of the omnium.

Trott, 22, finished 13th in the scratch race but then won the individual pursuit and elimination race.

That took her within six points of leader Kirsten Wild of the Netherlands.

Britain have so far won just two silver medals in Paris, and Olympic champion Jason Kenny was knocked out in the first round of the sprint on Saturday.

It raises the prospect of a first World Championships since 2001 without a British champion, a year before the Olympic Games in Rio.

"We can turn it around in 18 months - it's not like we're 100 miles away," said the 26-year-old from Bolton.

"There's all the time in the world. There's quite a long way to go and obviously that is our ultimate goal - to get on it and turn around those margins and stick our nose back in front."

Kenny was beaten by Venezuela's Hersony Canelo in the first knockout round after qualifying in 10th place at the Velodrome National.

"I just fluffed it up," he said. "I just got caught napping.

Kenny could not overhaul Canelon and made an early exit in the sprint

"It's not concentration. Perhaps you could say a little bit of confidence. It's such a fine margin between looking like an idiot and looking like a hero."

Trott made a disappointing start to the omnium in the opening scratch race before winning the second and third disciplines, once again showing her mastery of the elimination race.

The Briton ended day one on 96 points, two behind Australia's Annette Edmondson and six behind Wild, with the 500m time trial, the flying lap and the points race to come on Sunday.

Jess Varnish will hope to contend for medals in the women's keirin, while Owain Doull and Jon Dibben will start the madison.
