Greg Van Avermaet wins Tirreno-Adriatico, Peter Kennaugh is 15th

Van Avermaet is the first Belgian winner of the race since Roger de Vlaeminck in 1977

Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet claimed the Tirreno-Adriatico after finishing just one second ahead of Slovak Peter Sagan in the seven-stage race.

The final 10.1km time-trial at San Benedetto del Tronto was won easily by Swiss Fabian Cancellara.

Britain's Alex Dowsett was fourth in the stage, with Peter Kennaugh the highest-placed Briton overall in 15th.

The 'Race of the Two Seas' was hit by bad weather and Sunday's mountain stage was scrapped due to the threat of snow.
