Fabio Jakobsen out of coma and in good condition - Tour of Poland

Dutch rider Fabio Jakobsen is out of a coma and in a "good" condition, according to the Tour of Poland organisers.

The 23-year-old was involved in a high-speed crash at the finish of the opening stage of the race on Wednesday.

Jakobsen had facial surgery, but his Deceuninck-QuickStep team denied he had suffered head and brain injuries.

"Fabio Jakobsen is awake now from the coma. Condition is good," read a tweet from race organisers.

His team say he is now facing a "long and arduous" recovery.

"Fabio underwent a five-hour maxillofacial surgery," Deceuninck-QuickStep said in a statement.

"He was able to move his legs and arms and communicate with the doctors, which immediately ruled out major neurological problems.

"Due to the surgery, speaking and eating will be a challenge in the coming period as the recovery process is expected to be a long and arduous one."

Jakobsen's compatriot Dylan Groenewegen, who caused the crash, has been suspended by his Jumbo-Visma team pending the outcome of a disciplinary by the UCI, cycling's governing body.

The 27-year-old, who has apologised for the crash, drifted across the road as he contested the sprint finish in Katowice.

"Team Jumbo-Visma stands for fair sportsmanship, within the rules. With his move Dylan broke a sports rule and that's unacceptable," said the team.

"We have decided that Dylan will not start in a race until the judgment of the disciplinary committee to which the UCI has handed over the incident.

"We will support Dylan and his family as a team to come through this (mentally) tough time for them."

Bagioli dedicated his debut win to his injured team-mate

Deceuninck-QuickStep team-mate Andrea Bagioli dedicated his first professional victory to Jakobsen after sprinting home on the opening stage of the Tour de l'Ain in Ceyzeriat on Friday.

"Thanks to my team. This win is for Fabio," he said.

Team Ineos' general classification contenders Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal finished alongside the leaders in a bunch finish, but Chris Froome, who is leaving the team for Israel Start-Up Nation at the end of 2020, lost time on his rivals.

The three-day race concludes at the top of Grand Colombier on Sunday.
