Great Britain's Zoe Backstedt and Joshua Tarling won gold in their junior time trial events at the Road Cycling World Championships in Australia.

Backstedt, 17, beat Justyna Czapla of Germany by more than a minute and a half in the women's race.

Tarling, 18, took the men's title in Wollongong by 19 seconds from home favourite Hamish McKenzie.

The two Welsh riders both won silver medals in the same events 12 months ago.

Backstedt also won junior road race gold at the 2021 championships and will try to retain that title on Saturday.

She also holds junior world titles in cyclocross and in the madison on the track.

Backstedt led by 50 seconds at the halfway stage of the time trial and completed the 14.1km course in 18 minutes and 26 seconds, finishing with an average speed of 45.9 km/h.

Britain's Isabel Sharp finished 10th, two minutes and four seconds behind her team-mate.

Tarling posted the fastest times at all intermediate checks in the men's junior event as he completed 28.8km in 34 minutes and 59 seconds.

Tarling, who has also won European omnium and team pursuit gold on the track, signed a three-year deal to ride for Ineos Grenadiers in August and will continue riding on both road and track.

Great Britain now have three medals at the 2022 World Championships, after Leo Hayter took bronze in the men's under-23 time trial.

Hayter's elder brother, Ethan, finished fourth in the men's elite time trial.
