I’ve followed Cav throughout his entire career, his race craft is second to none and his determination to win is something else, truly inspirational! I’ve been fortunate enough to meet him a few times and he’s very engaging and has some great stories. He will succeed in whatever he does, thanks for the memories Missile!

Evenepoel is the TT world champion and has made a great start so far. With 27.2km to go he's already 47 seconds up on Tejada.

Britain's Simon Yates is 23 seconds behind Martinez at the first checkpoint, but that's actually the same time as Tejada.

  4. Postpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 21 July

Our current leader is Harold Tejada, although Frenchman Lenny Martinez had the fastest time at checkpoint one - 21 minutes and 20 seconds.

Cav is quite simply my hero. He's always been a delight to watch, but in recent years his career has grown to mean so much more to me. I grew up in the 90s worshipping Armstrong, until the doping revelations when I was a teenager ripped that out from under me, and I spent several years feeling very bitter about having been, as I saw it, betrayed by my hero. But when Cav mounted his comeback in 2021, having been through everything he had (and relating personally as someone who also suffered with depression), it was a genuinely healing process for me as I'd finally got another cycling hero, and this time a genuine one. I burst into tears when he won that first stage in 2021, and again when he won his 35th this year, having come back once again from a terrible setback. He just never stops. I was 13 when he won his first stage, and 29 now as I watch him retire. He just never stops, and inspires me to get up every day, push on and do the same. I just want to give him a hug. Whatever he does now, I hope he has a wonderful new career, and perhaps we can look forward to seeing a Cavendish Jr in the bunch before too long!

Watching Wiggo lead out Cav on the Champs Elysees in 2012 made me fall in love, Cav gave everything as a domestique and was replayed with the yellow jersey leading him out, perfect example of teamwork and friendship aligning. Obsessed with cycling and tdf since.

Back to the action and I can tell you that Simon Yates has just set off.

Still a while until we see the favourites.

I met my wife in 2008. We holiday in Crete every year and (before kids) would cycle the mountains in the morning then watch Cav win stages together (in a bar) in the afternoon - even on our honeymoon! Fantastic memories! ❤️

Lucky enough to meet Cav on a train years back. What an absolutely lovely fella. Inspirational hero.

aw Cav in green at the summit of Alpe d’huez in 2011. Was in the groupetto rather than winning the sprint but was still amazed at the how strong he looked at the top of the 21 turns. An absolute legend of the sport, enjoy retirement Mark!

Twenty-Twelve, what a year! When I, and so many others fell in love with road cycling.

Thanks for the reminder Jim, might treat myself to some highlights tonight.

What Cav means to me: one of my favourite sporting moments - maybe the favourite - is Wiggins in yellow leading out Cav in the World Champion jersey for the final stage in 2012. Still spine-tingling even now.

News from checkpoint two. Geraint Thomas has gained a spot. The Welshman and former winner is up to 27th, although is unlikely to be challenging for the stage.
