Luke Humphries will know the tournament has opened up after Luke Littler was knocked out - but even before that the world number one fancied his chances in Milton Keynes.

As he told ITV4 after winning his quarter-final.

“Now I can go back for a nice sleep, come back tonight and hopefully I can perform at those levels again and if I do then it’s going to take a good performance to beat me.

“There’s a lot of great players left in it but if I can play like that then I’ll have a great chance.”

Luke Humphries has been relatively comfortable in Milton Keynes so far as he's beaten Josh Cullen 3-1, Josh Rock 4-0 and then Damon Heta 4-1.

Danny Noppert beat Michael Smith 3-1 in the first round and WIlliam O'Connor 4-0 in the second, before his thrilling victory over Stephen Bunting in a final leg decider.

  7. Humphries the favouritepublished at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Humphries v Noppert

World number one Luke Humphries v 13th-ranked Danny Noppert

Luke Humphries is world number one and 12 places above Danny Noppert in the rankings.

The 2024 world champion is also on top for televised titles, but we've seen already in this tournament that previous honours are no guarantee of success here.

  8. Interesting formatpublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

So the World Masters is set play, just as we're used to at the World Championship, but the sets are shorter as they're just the best of three legs - rather than the traditional best of five.

It means there's still scope for big comebacks, unlike straight leg play where one player can run away with it, but there's not much room for error with just two out of three legs needed to win every set.

The format will hopefully produce another couple of belters tonight, although not everyone is a fan, Luke Littler may not be so keen on it right now after going out earlier today.

Are you a fan of it though? Let your voting thumbs do the talking...

  10. Littler dumped outpublished at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

It's not quite gone Luke Littler's way in the three tournaments he's played since he became the youngest ever PDC world champion.

He's only just turned 18 of course, so there's no real panic, but he's lost in the quarter-finals of the Bahrain Darts Masters to Gerwyn Price, the semi-finals of the Dutch Darts Masters to Stephen Bunting and now a quarter-final exit at the World Masters against Jonny Clayton.

He's averaged 108, 99 and 105 in his three defeats though so not too much to worry about, and you wouldn't bet against him turning up and winning next time out.

    Luke Little and Stephen Bunting

It was an eventful afternoon of quarter-finals in Milton Keynes, with the main headline obviously being Luke Littler's shock exit.

Jonny Clayton's a former winner here but he was a massive underdog against the new world champion. The Welshman ran out a deserved winner though.

Defending champion Stephen Bunting also went out in a thriller with Danny Noppert while Luke Humphries and Dimitri van den Bergh were impressive winners.
