Italian Emanuele Gaudiano beat Great Britain's Ben Maher to win the FEI World Cup Jumping qualifier at London's Olympia.
Britain's Michael Whitaker was third, while Scotland's world number one Scott Brash finished fourth.
London 2012 team gold medallist Maher looked set to lead a British 1-2-3 after he clocked a time of 37.15 seconds in the jump-off.
But Gaudiano shaved almost a second off Maher's time to win in 36.20 secs.
It was the 29-year-old police officer's biggest grand prix win of his career.
"To win here is fantastic," said Gaudiano, who was on board Admara. "I love this show, and my horse was outstanding today."
Guy Williams finished fifth to make it four British riders in the top five.
