Luke Varney is still unlikely to return to Derby County despite Blackpool's relegation from the Premier League, reports BBC Radio Derby.

Varney, who has a year to run on his Rams contract, was loaned to the Seasiders at the start of the season, external, with a view to signing permanently.

The financial implications of the relegation of Ian Holloway's side may scupper the deal.

But the Rams are still looking to sell the 28-year-old striker.

Varney first joined Derby in 2008, external but has barely featured since Nigel Clough took over as manager in January 2009.

He signed permanently after an initial loan spell but has played only 15 games for the Championship club.

Varney scored five goals in 31 games for Blackpool in the top flight this season.
