New Ipswich Town signing Michael Chopra is confident he can end the club's seven-year wait for a 20-goal striker.

Town have not had a forward break that scoring barrier since Shefki Kuqi notched 20 in the 2004/05 campaign.

But 27-year-old Chopra, who scored nine in 26 league starts for Cardiff last term, told BBC Radio Suffolk: "All the clubs I've been at I've scored goals.

"I believe if get the right service and players alongside me then I'll score goals, no doubt about it."

He added: "I'm a player that will play in the box and I'm always hungry to get goals and hopefully I can do that this year. I believe I will."

Supporters at Portman Road have been longing for a potent striking threat, with Jason Scotland's 10-goal haul last season the only double-figured tally from the past twoseasons.

Chopra, who suffered with injuries and loss of form in his final season at Cardiff, nevertheless brings a career record of 87 goals from 251 games.

And the former Newcastle and Sunderland man has reason to hope for a bright start when Town begin the Championship season away at Bristol City, a side he has scored against five times in eight games.

"I've got a good thing about playing Bristol City, I always manage to score against them, and I'll be looking forward to that game," Chopra said.

Chopra arrived in Suffolk this summer in a deal believed to be worth £1.5m and he has said he dismissed interest from other sides to link up with Ipswich boss Paul Jewell.

"There would have been one or two clubs interested but when I spoke to the manager - he came up and saw me close to the north east - I realised he's such a good person, an honest man," he explained.

"I'm an honest person myself and I was happy with how talks had gone. I said I'd give my answer within a week and I did that."
